🚨 Your Problem Statement Should NOT Be a History Lesson!

Many undergraduate students make the same mistake when writing the Problem Statement.

They spend pages explaining the general history of their topic but fail to clearly explain what the actual problem is.

Your Problem Statement should make the reader understand:

🔹 What is happening?

🔹 What should be happening?

🔹 What is the gap between the two?

🔹 Why does this gap need to be investigated?

For example, don't simply write:

❌ "Social media has become popular among university students. Facebook, TikTok, Instagram and WhatsApp are widely used..."

That gives background information, but where is the problem?

Instead, move toward the issue:

✅ "Despite the widespread use of social media among undergraduate students, concerns remain about its possible influence on students' academic performance. However, limited evidence exists regarding this relationship among students in the selected institution."

Now the reader can clearly see the issue and the need for the study.

💡 Research Tip: After writing your Problem Statement, ask yourself:

"If someone reads this section, will they clearly understand why my study needs to be conducted?"

If the answer is no, go back and make the problem clearer.

The truth is:

Good research objectives should clearly show what the study wants to achieve.

Simple. Specific. Focused.

👉 What does the study hope to achieve?

These questions help you build a stronger foundation for your project.

One important thing students should know is this:

Good research work usually starts with a clearly understood problem — not just a “nice” topic.

Don’t rush the foundation.

Be honest with yourself for a moment.

Are you actually writing your project
or are you just typing words and hoping it works?

Many students are busy:
• Downloading past projects
• Rearranging sentences
• Changing words with Grammarly

But they are not progressing.

Here is a simple test:

👉 Can you explain your research problem clearly without reading your document?

If the answer is no, then writing more will not help.

This is why some students write 40 pages and still get: “Revise.”

Progress in final year project does not come from writing faster.

It comes from writing with clarity.
And clarity does not come accidentally.

Don’t explain. Just answer honestly.
