Here’s the real picture as of Sunday, April 5, 2026:
Who’s out
Luka Dončić is officially listed out with a left hamstring strain on the NBA injury report, and Reuters reported he’s expected to miss at least the rest of the regular season, with his playoff status still uncertain. Austin Reaves is also officially out with a left oblique muscle strain, and Reuters says he’s expected to miss 4–6 weeks, which takes him out for the rest of the regular season and likely at least the first round. Marcus Smart is also listed out right now with a right ankle contusion. 
What that means for the playoff window
The Lakers are currently 3rd in the West at 50–27. Denver is 4th at 50–28 and Houston is 5th at 48–29. So the Lakers are not fighting to avoid the play-in anymore; they already clinched a playoff spot. The fight now is about holding the No. 3 seed and not sliding into a tougher first-round path.
