In a continuation of our conversation about the exploitative nature of reality TV, I reviewed documentary “The Contestant,” an emotional and truly gripping film about the 1998 Japanese reality TV show “Denpa Shonen: A Life in Prizes” and the ordeal its participant Nasubi experienced while living off of magazine sweepstakes prizes alone in a tiny room for over a year.

It’s really a wild story, but the documentary surprised me with its honest and optimistic depictions of Nasubi and “Denpa Shonen” producer, Toshio Tsuchiya.
