Tonight, we are closing the pool. 💙

Another summer coming to an end.

But as I sat here tonight with pumpkin coffee in my Halloween mug, the fire going and the cool September air rolling in, I looked around and thought...

THIS.

This is what I saw in my head when I decided to build that roof over the deck.

This summer tested me. I built, I figured things out, I changed plans, I got frustrated, and I kept going.

And somewhere along the way, it became more than a project.

Tonight I'm sitting on the couch that wasn't here last year, under the roof that once existed only in my imagination, next to a warm fire... and I feel incredibly blessed.

The pool is closing. Summer is ending.

But this space I created is becoming exactly what I hoped it would become.

A place to slow down.
A place to breathe.
A place to enjoy the life I've worked so hard to build.

And just as one season closes, my favorite one begins. 🍂

Goodbye, pool days.
Hello, cozy nights.

Well… today did NOT go according to plan. 😂

After last night's Live, I really thought today was going to look completely different.

Instead, the wood-burning stove finally got cleaned out—hallelujah! 🙌 And just about the time I could check that off the list, I heard the words every homeowner loves to hear: NOT!!!

“We have no water.”

And this is where personalities in a household become VERY apparent. 😂 One of us immediately began preparing for the complete collapse of civilization. JOHN

The other one was basically: Okay. We have a problem. Let's assess it. What do we know? What can we do? Who do we call? Get 'er done. DONNA

I may or may not have suggested that somebody locate his big-boy pants somewhere along the way. 😂

And then came the part of today that I don't want to overlook.

I sent one message to a dear friend whose family has been drilling wells for generations. Gary is have no water
By pure chance, he and his daughter were already coming across our way.
He replies
“We are on our way”

Within no time they were in my basement. Bad pressure switch. They had the part on the truck, his daughter replaced it, and just like that—we had water again.

And suddenly the aggravation of the day became gratitude.

Because sometimes a blessing isn't that nothing goes wrong.
I am BLESSED with THE BEST FRIENDS in the world 🌎
Sometimes the blessing is having the right people in your life when it does.

THAT is what I'm taking from today.

The stove is clean.
The water is running.
Dinner still needs to be made. 😂
And it's only 3:30.

So I'm standing here with my Sleepy Hollow mug, whipped cream, pumpkin pie spice and a whole lot of gratitude.

Gratitude first. Everything else follows. ❤️

Now… can the rest of the house please refrain from breaking until tomorrow? 😂

Today, I could talk about how hard life can be.

I could talk about wanting more balance, more peace, fewer difficult days and a little less weight to carry.

But I’ll save that for another day.

Because today, September 11th, I am reminded that I get to carry it.

I get to carry the hard days.
I get to carry the worry.
I get to carry the changes, the memory loss, the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde moments, the frustration, the uncertainty and everything else that sometimes comes with this life we have been given.

And I would carry it all again tomorrow.

Because I still have him.

Twenty-five years ago, my husband Johnny D was an NYPD Detective assigned to the Crime Scene Unit. When our city needed him, he went to Ground Zero and did the job he was called to do.

The NYPD is part of our story. It is where our paths crossed, where our careers began and, ultimately, where our life together began.

There are so many families who would give anything to carry one more difficult day with the person they lost.

So today, I will not complain about the weight.

I will carry it.

Maybe that is part of my calling.

I will love him through the good days and the difficult ones. I will remember when he cannot. I will stand beside him when life isn't peaceful or easy. And I will remain grateful that after everything this life has asked of us, I still get to call him my husband.

Today I honor Johnny D.

And I remember every NYPD and FDNY brother and sister, every first responder, every civilian, and every beautiful soul we have lost in the years since because of the illnesses and injuries connected to that day.

For all the angels who didn't get another tomorrow, we remember.

And for those of us fortunate enough to still have our tomorrow...

we carry on.

Today, my heart is heavy.

Before Donna Powered by Creativity, before YouTube, before any of this, there was another chapter of my life. I was a New York City police officer, and the 13th Precinct was my home.

Fazio and Smith were my friends.

On September 11, 2001, they responded when our city needed them, and they never came home.

Today I remember them, but I also remember every life forever connected to that day. NYPD. FDNY. First responders. Civilians. Those who were lost that morning, and those we have lost in the 25 years since from 9/11-related illnesses and injuries.

There are so many angels attached to this one moment in time.

Twenty-five years have passed, but some people never leave your heart. Some bonds never end.

To Fazio and Smith, to my brothers and sisters in blue, and to every family still carrying someone they love...

I remember.
I will always remember.

Gone, but never forgotten.
