Owner of a Tiny beer brewing shed with a passion for all things beer. On a mission to brew great beer and to support small pubs and breweries in London and the UK.
I know it's past Christmas but keep this in mind for NYE as well!
BEER-CURIOUS FRIENDS: You may be less aware than us beer geeks that we've reached a point where we're averaging one craft brewery closing every day in the UK. On top of facing the same economic pressures as everyone else, craft brewers are being squeezed out of the market by the aggressive sales tactics of the big corporates. If you're stocking up on beer for Christmas, or looking for beery gifts, you could really help:
1. Go to the pub. (They're struggling too.) Try a beer you've never had before. If you have time, check out who owns it (brands like Camden Town and Beavertown still make very good beers, but they're now owned by the majors.)
2. Check out your local craft brewers - wherever you are, there's one close to you. Buy direct from them if you can - they'll likely deliver very quickly.
3. Avoid buying your beer from supermarkets, where the brewer is making next to no margin at all. Google to see if there's an independent bottle shop near you. Or use an independent online beer retailer. There are still some deals to be had!
4. Get festive! Christmas is a time for special edition beers that go well with every aspect of Christmas, from champagne beer to start to strong ales with Christmas pud to porter and stour with blue cheese. Nothing at all against wine, but sometimes beer actually goes better with Christmas food than the same old wine you have every year.
I promise, none of this will be arduous. Please feel free to share. And do ask me for tips based on where you are. Cheers!
As we draw closer to Christmas Day I wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has subscribed and supported my small channel this year. Here's to 2023!
