Deaf Watch Match Party: Ghana Vs Croatia.
I always believe that if you want to know how inclusive a space truly is, you have to look at the massive moments that bring the rest of the world together. Right now, we are in the thick of the FIFA World Cup season. Everyone is cheering, shouting, and sharing the thrill of the game. But it made me curious: How do Deaf people experience and enjoy football? How are they fairing in this high energy season?
Driven by that curiosity, I decided to organize a football watch party specifically for the Deaf community during the recent Ghana vs. Croatia match.
To be completely honest, I was anxious. As the event drew closer, my biggest fear was that people wouldn't show up, especially the women. I kept looking out, hoping to see my ladies. When the girls pulled up and walked through the door? The relief and pure excitement I felt was indescribable.
Of course, putting this together wasn't without its hurdles. I faced challenges along the way, and there were moments where uncertainty crept in. But I realized that doubt and fear are just an illusion. What kept me going was a stubborn courage and a deep desire to see this happen.
And what followed was nothing short of amazing.
The moment I introduced the idea, the enthusiasm was instant. The community didn't just attend; they took ownership. They jumped right in and helped me organize everything from start to finish.
Let me tell you!! the energy in the room was electric! We had an incredible time, and it turns out, the Deaf community knows the game inside and out, analyzing plays and celebrating with a passion that could rival any stadium.
Above all, this experience reminded me of a beautiful truth: Deaf people deeply appreciate those who appreciate them. When you show up for a community with genuine intent, they show up for you tenfold.
This experience taught me three powerful lessons:
1. Everything is possible if you just execute. Fear of a low turnout almost held me back, but taking that leap of faith changed everything.
2. Doubt or fear is just an illusion. Challenges are inevitable, but the courage to make it happen is what keeps you moving forward.
3. You can make a difference wherever you are. Community is built by creating the spaces we want to see.
A massive thank you to everyone who showed up, supported, and helped bring this vision to life. This is just the beginning of creating more inclusive spaces where everyone gets to share in the joy of the moments that unite us.
