The Portrait Guru

When I was at university studying illustration, my lecturers always told us that our sketchbooks were a place to draw, create and make whatever we wanted.

It’s your space to create the art YOU want to make. Don’t feel guilty about drawing endless amounts of hands (good luck), portraits (good choice), or even plants (nice idea).

Whatever you want to create, create it! 🎨

Here's a simple (and maybe obvious) trick that’s easy to forget! πŸ‘€

One of the easiest ways to give your drawings more depth is to create a stronger sense of foreground and background.

Make objects closer to you bigger, more saturated, more detailed and heavier in line weight. As things move further away, make them smaller, less detailed, lighter and more desaturated.

It’s a simple trick, but it can make a huge difference.

Try it in your next drawing and watch your artwork pop! 🎨

Ever tried drawing a portrait… INSIDE a box? πŸ‘€

It sounds weird, but this exercise can improve how you understand the head in 3D. I’ve just uploaded a new video on my channel showing how it works πŸ‘‡

What are the 'planes of the head'? 🧠

The Portrait Guru

3 tips to help you understand the planes of the head:

πŸ”Ή Think in surfaces, not outlines: instead of copying the edges of the face, look for where the form changes direction.

πŸ’‘ Ask which way the plane is facing: this helps you understand where the light hits and where shadows should appear.

πŸ“ Concentrate on the big planes first: focus on the forehead, nose and jaw before worrying about smaller details.

Mastering planes will help your portraits feel more solid, realistic and three-dimensional.
