The Finkelstein Test, which is used to diagnose De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis — a painful condition affecting the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist.

What the image explains
Affected tendons
The condition involves inflammation/swelling of:
Abductor Pollicis Longus (APL) tendon
Extensor Pollicis Brevis (EPB) tendon
These tendons pass through a narrow tunnel near the wrist. Swelling in this tunnel causes pain.

How to perform the Finkelstein Test
Place the thumb inside the fist
Close the fingers over the thumb
Bend the wrist downward toward the little finger side (ulnar deviation)

Positive Test
Sharp pain over the thumb side of the wrist indicates a positive Finkelstein test
Suggests De Quervain’s syndrome/tenosynovitis

Common symptoms
Pain near the base of the thumb
Swelling near the wrist
Pain while gripping, lifting, writing, or holding objects
Difficulty moving the thumb

Common causes
Repetitive thumb movements
Excessive mobile phone use
Lifting babies repeatedly
Typing, gaming, or manual work
Sports involving gripping

Treatment
Rest and activity modification
Thumb spica splint
Ice therapy
NSAIDs (if prescribed)

Physiotherapy:
Tendon gliding exercises
Stretching
Ultrasound/TENS
Corticosteroid injection (in severe cases)
