In 5e and 5.5, rules for when pets and summoned creatures act are kind of all over the place. RAW, Familiars roll their own initiative, Summoned creatures (via spells) usually go on the player's turn but AFTER the player, Beast Master's pet and Steel Defenders et al go whenever the player decides to use their Bonus Action... and don't even get me started on mounts. At YOUR table, when does a friendly creature that's controlled by a player act?
