My Retro Life

Wow, this is... something! đŸ˜± My latest video, "Metal Gear Solid 3 RUINED the Franchise for Me," is officially my most disliked video by far, sitting at 83.7% likes compared to my channel average of 98%! If you haven't seen it yet, now's your chance to witness history in the making. Here's the video - https://youtu.be/KENKFW9EtxM

Seriously though, I wanted to say a massive THANK YOU to all of you who engaged with the video. While the numbers show strong disagreement, I'm genuinely touched and grateful that the vast majority of you did not resort to anger, name-calling, belittling, or just the pure hate I've sometimes seen from more extreme MGS fans. The comments have been passionate, insightful, and even hilarious, which is exactly what I hoped for! (Though I did have one guy say, "I'm glad your Dad is dead so he doesn't have to listen to you speak this nonsense." That's just wild. Let's keep it respectful, folks!)

At its heart, this video was meant as a love letter to the first Metal Gear Solid game and a frustrating confession that my love for the series really ended there, despite my attempts to keep it going. And maybe... just maybe... I was wrong. The incredible discussions and arguments you've all put forward have got me thinking. I'm willing to give it another shot!

Let me know your thoughts below! And if you want to push that dislike ratio even further, go watch the video! 😉

My Retro Life

Hey guys! My latest video is a heartfelt tribute to one of my biggest inspirations on YouTube — James Rolfe, the "Angry Video Game Nerd" â€Ș@JamesNintendoNerd‬. In the video, I talk about how, in so many ways, James has always reminded me of my Dad. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can check it out here on My Retro Life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmiAC...

Well, James actually saw the video
and reposted it on his Twitter/X with some incredibly kind words. This meant so much to me!

Dad passed away on October 29th, 2007 after a long battle with Melanoma Skin Cancer. This was just two days before James released his "Halloween" episode of AVGN. I remember watching that video when it dropped, and I remember thinking how much my Dad would have loved it. As I got to know James through his Cinemassacre channel, I saw more than just the Nerd character. I saw a fellow filmmaker and retro game fan with the same love for old consoles and games that I grew up playing with my Dad. In a weird, cathartic way, watching his videos helped me keep that connection to my Dad alive. I know without a doubt that if Dad were still here, he would’ve absolutely loved James’s work.

So a huge thank you to James for always being an inspiration and for taking the time to watch the video. This has meant a lot! 🙏

My Retro Life

Hey guys! If you haven’t watched our latest My Retro Life episode, now’s the time! It’s titled "Dad Said No to Donkey Kong on Game Boy (But I Fought for It)" and just went live this past Sunday! Watch Here - https://youtu.be/2HoqjNlWog4

It’s a story straight from 1994
when I desperately wanted Donkey Kong for Game Boy, but Dad didn’t quite see the value in it (at first!). If you’ve ever had to convince your parents to get you a game, you’ll definitely relate.

And check out this image from our home movies — Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman! Kind of a forgotten gem, don’t you think?

For a long time, the Super Game Boy was the only way we played Game Boy games in our house. We had traded in our original Game Boy for a Game Gear, and it wasn’t until we got the Super Game Boy in 1994 that we dove back into handheld gaming — but on the TV! Games like Wario Blast were ones I never played portably, only through that magical SNES add-on.

Wario Blast is a fascinating crossover — a collaboration between Nintendo and Hudson Soft, combining Wario and Bomberman into one wild little package. And yet... Bomberman never made it into Smash Bros. despite this being an official crossover. đŸ€Ż That’s always felt like a missed opportunity to me.

Have you ever played Wario Blast? Or did you also only experience Game Boy games through Super Game Boy?

Let me know in the comments — and definitely go watch the new episode if you haven’t already!

Thanks for being part of the journey ❀

My Retro Life

Hey guys! In case you haven't seen it yet, I just dropped a new My Retro Life episode all about Jurassic Park Games! Watch here đŸ‘‰đŸ» https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8neH2...

I had a blast reliving the memories of those games and the phenomenon that was Jurassic Park in 1993.

It got me thinking about this image from my Dad's home video camera. That’s me and my buddy Albert back in 1993, playing the Jurassic Park game on Sega Genesis. We’re controlling the raptor—arguably the coolest thing you could do in a game back then—and I just love what this image captures. This was exactly what gaming looked like for me growing up: two kids on the carpet, one controller, taking turns, helping each other through a one-player game. We’d trade off every time one of us died, shouting strategies and cheering each other on. No online multiplayer. Just real-life co-op in its purest form.

And if you look closely? You’ll see my whole childhood game collection on that little shelf by the window—Sega Genesis cases stacked on top, and if your eyes are sharp, you’ll even spot some Super Nintendo and Sega CD in there too.

That Genesis Jurassic Park game? It was my favorite of all the JP games from that early ’90s era. After seeing the movie (and being scared out of my mind!), I just had to relive it again—and the video games were the way to do that. From console to arcade, Jurassic Park invaded our homes, our imaginations, and our playgrounds. It was everywhere.

Thanks for watching and supporting My Retro Life—and for remembering these moments with me.
