YOUTUBE INSIDER KNOWLEDGE: until recently, youtube counted a view only after a user watched a certain percentage of a video. That's called an engaged view. But it changed this week, so that any click on a video counts as a view, even if the user immediately pauses the video or clicks away.

Bat Country has a retention rate of about 50%, so half of the people who watch my videos watch until the end, and half click away after a certain amount of time. 50% retention rate is pretty good. But what it means is that if you see a new video of mine get 50,000 views today, it means it would have been 25,000 views a couple of weeks ago.

Why mention that? Well, because there's a chance it's going to look like there's a huge new audience for sobriety content. That's not necessarily the case; it's just the new way Youtube measures views. A sudden, noticeable increase in views is not indicative of a channel's sudden success, it's just... views that would not previously have been counted because the viewer clicked away are now counted. Makes no difference to advertisers or revenue though - that stuff is still based on the old engaged views measurement.

If you recently followed me from my iceberg video, then welcome, and there's good news and bad news. The bad news is that my little sobriety channel doesn't normally look like that, and the good news is, my little sobriety channel doesn't normally look like that.

Today we go back to Bat Country basics, which is my big dumb face talking about the everyday life of a recovering alcoholic. I know, I know, everyone wants the big tentpole videos like the iceberg thing, but truth is, I'm better at this simple, honest stuff than I am at the big, heavily-edited stuff.

I won't blame you if the iceberg video made you subscribe and this normal video makes you unsubscribe again. Don't feel bad.

Here's a glimpse of a new video I've been working on for a couple of weeks. It's huge and it's not finished yet, but this fact is just too interesting to keep to myself. TL;DR: the Temperance movement invented the idea of spontaneous human combustion. Those sneaky tee-totallers.

This video will be ready in a couple of days, so keep an eye out for it.

In the meantime, I also made this deep dive into a specific case of human rights abuse in Qatar. It's not sobriety related so I haven't been shouting about it here, but if you're interested, and it's the kind of thing that interests you, maybe it's a good way to kill 20 minutes.

It's been brought to my attention that Delirium Dirk's channel is gone.

For the uninitiated, Dirk was one of the first people on youtube to talk clearly and openly about his experiences with Delirium Tremens. The no bullsh*t way talked about alcohol and recovery was particularly inspirational to me, and to several others who continue to talk about our experiences on this platform.

We eventually lost him to his struggles, which serve as a constant reminder that once you've crossed that threshold into severe alcohol withdrawal, we need to be vigilant every day of our lives, forever.

I don't know why his channels is gone now, two years after his death, and because he was important to me, I'd like to find a way to make sure he's not forgotten.

Does anyone know why his stuff is gone?
