Sarah Ann is a classic 18’ carvel sloop built in Tasmania in the late sixties.
She found me all the way up in Queensland where I began restoring her.
I towed her 2000 km back to Tasmania where I am completing her renovations and enjoying some adventurous sailing around the Tasmanian coastline.

Behind the scenes, there’s been a lot going on in preparation for what I’m calling “A Winter Season of Sailing on the Tamar.”
We’re house-sitting for the next four months, right on the banks of the river, and Sarah Ann will soon be swinging on the mooring just out front. I’m looking forward to sharing more of the quiet nuances and wild beauty of the Tamar Estuary from this temporary base — a front-row seat to whatever winter decides to throw at us.
Today I’m heading down to Hobart to take part in a creator’s workshop hosted by Screen Tasmania. It’s a pretty special opportunity — a small group of storytellers coming together with the goal of sharpening our video and storytelling skills. I’ve got my notebook, camera, and about three different ways of making coffee packed. Should be a good few days.
After that, we’ll be back up to River Heads where Sarah Ann is waiting for a few final touch-ups before she’s launched for what promises to be an interesting season. One thing’s certain — the weather’s already showing its full personality. We’re in for everything from glassy, pink-hued sunrises to howling north-westerlies screaming down from Bass Strait, just over the ridge. All part of the charm, I suppose.
Thanks for hanging in there with me over the past month while I’ve been laying the groundwork for this next chapter. As we get a little longer in the tooth, things take a bit more time and care — but I’m still very much in the game. I’m hoping to give this slow-sailing, story-telling, small boat cruising life a proper go for at least another decade or so. I’ll be doing it all while caring for my beautiful wife, whose body isn’t quite playing fair at the moment — but whose spirit still lights the way.
Stick around. Things are about to get salty.

Today I received some very exciting news. Screen Tasmania have accepted me into a series of workshops focusing on videography and social media skills.
“On behalf of Screen Tasmania we’re excited to let you know that your application for the Masterclass Series has been successful - congratulations!”
I’m hoping I will learn how to take my videography to the next level.
Cheers Chris

🚗 We’re 1 km down the road from Gympie!
Thanks to early support—especially from those of you using Super Thanks and PayPal—Moonlight is officially on the move.
It’ll take $5,000 to get her all the way back to Tasmania…
That’s 2,350 km of boat-moving mayhem, one dollar at a time.
💸 $2.13 = 1 km closer to home

And yes—you’ll be in the credits.
And here are some early snaps of Moonlight. Shortly after launching on Lake Trevallyn, One of our first and very memorable cruises, with 10 children in tow. and of course, the Skipper looking very pensive.

A big shoutout to everyone who’s subscribed, liked, and commented on the videos. Your encouragement means the world — and your banter in the comments keeps me both amused and on my toes.
Special thanks go to those kind enough to support the channel through Super Thanks and Patreon. Your contributions help keep the boats floating, the camera rolling, and the coffee strong. You're basically the wind in my sails — and occasionally the duct tape holding things together.
It has taken a lot of time and patience to get this far, but thanks to you I am on a roll now. No video this week - my carer role has kicked in a bit more than usual, as we are setting Denise up for 24/7 home based care. But in-between my responsibilities I somehow found the time to write a book over the past several weeks.
I am planning to release the book about my stumbles and victories with Wood and Sail one chapter at a time. The first chapter is already published on patreon.com/sailboats if you want to jump over there and take a look.
Kindly Chris

Eric is one of my faves. One of the most courageous solo sailers out there. I’m hoping to take a couple of steps in his tracks. Maybe lake pedder will throw a couple of snow flurries my way? It’s been so mild but you never know.

You spoke I listened! I'm keeping the same channel name. I plan more sailing and cruising videos with a maintenance segment to keep it real. And I'm going to cover all the list of destinations I mentioned plus many more God willing. Here is a link that will get you to my latest video. It will go live on Saturday evening, but you can see it here for free.

I’m gathering feedback to help me hone the focus of this channel. People like the name small sailboat cruising. People like the sailing and cruising videos best. That makes sense eh?
Now, I’ve just finished an extended cruise to the Huon and then 5 days in Georges Bay St Helens.
I have discovered that there are some who like the maintenance and restoration part of sailing. It’s inseparable from sailing. So I’m going to put a maintenance and restoration clip into the cruising videos featuring everything that goes on between trips. That’s the reality of it especially when you have a classic wooden boat.
So the next logical question is what’s my next quest?
