The SA trial of Stephan Sterns, accused of 60 counts of SA and homicide in the death of Madeline (Maddie) Soto, was supposed to start in May in Orange County, FL. However, this week there was a hearing on the Defendant's motions to suppress evidence obtained from his cell phone and Google searches. The defense claimed the evidence was obtained illegally. Prosecutors argued Sterns gave his permission to view and download his phone, as audio and video evidence supports. However, the judge said he needs time to go over the evidence before he rules on the motions. On April 23rd, Judge Keith Carsten ruled that the May date needed to be postponed based on the unavailability to try the case on time. The SA case is now scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on July 2, 2025 with the jury trial to begin July 14th. Judge Carsten said he would rule on the defense motions on June 30th. Cutting it that close to the trial, would that even give them time to proceed July 2nd? And if he tosses said evidence, would the state be able to move forward with their case? This is a horrible story. Maddie turned 13 on February 22, 2024. Her mother, Jenn Soto (who has not been charged, though lots of opinions, mine included, think she should have been ) reported her missing in February 26th. Her body was found March 1st, 2024. Sterns claimed he dropped her off at school. Evidence later showed that not to be true. Upon talking to the police they found numerous SA photos on his phone. He was charged February 29th, 2025 for the SA and later the homicide. The homicide case is due to begin in September of this year. Have you heard about this case?
