In honor of the release of Moana (2026), here's Donkey telling Maui to try a little tenderness and apologize to Moana
(At last, Dragon finally flew to Te Ka, with the Dronkeys right behind her) Donkey: All right, kids, go to Shrek's house and tell him it's a play date. Mom and dad will be right there after we save Moana. (the Dronkeys smile, nod, and flew all the way to Shrek's house. Dragon sadly waved goodbye to them in tears, although she and her husband have to save Moana and stop Te Ka. Maui gets ready to jump but Donkey hurries to get in his way) Donkey: Maui, wait, wait! Wait a minute! You wanna do this apology thing right, don't you? Maui: What are you talking about?! Donkey: There's a scene. There's a scene you gotta wait for. Te Ka is probably gonna attack Moana with her fiery fist, and that's where you come in, stop Te Ka, and yell "I am sorry!" Maui: Oh, I don't have time for apologies, I gotta save Moana now! Donkey: Hey, wait! What are you doing?! Listen to me! (Donkey pins his hooves on Maui) Donkey: Look, you love Moana, don't you? Maui: Yes. Donkey: You wanna hold her? Maui: Yes. Donkey: Squeeze her? Maui: Yes! Donkey: 🎵 Then you gotta, gotta try a little tenderness! 🎶 Even the daughter of the chief likes that romantic stuff! Maui: All right! Stop singing! Now when does Te Ka attack Moana? Donkey: We gotta check it out. (Maui tosses Donkey up higher so he can see Moana) Maui: What do you see?! Donkey: I see Moana! She's heading for the island of Te Fiti! (sees Te Ka attack Moana with her fiery fist) Oh, sweet mother of monkey milk, she's already attacking her. Maui: D'oh, for the love of Pete! (Maui jumps off Dragon without catching Donkey, who hits Dragon's back hard) (Te Ka almost kills Moana, but Maui appears chopping off her arm) Maui: I am sorry! Moana: Maui? (Moana looks initially happily surprised to see him save her, but quickly becomes upset) Maui: (lands on Moana's boat) Moana: Maui, what are you doing here?! Maui: Moana, I want to talk to you. Moana: Oh, now you wanna talk?! Well, it's a little too late for that, so if you'll excuse me... (Moana tries to sail to the island of Te Fiti, but Maui pulls her away by the hand) Maui: But you can't do this alone! (Moana frees her hand from Maui's grip) Moana: And why not?! Maui: Because... because if you do this alone, you will die. And besides, that's not true love! Moana: And what do you know about true love?! Maui: Well, I... uh... I mean... (Moana is taken aback by this)

(On the same island Maui was marooned on before, Maui still looks at his damaged fish hook when he hears a noise. He looks around to investigate, and sees Donkey drawing a huge line around the island) Maui: Donkey? What are you doing? Donkey: I'm drawing a line that you can't cross. Maui: Line? Around the island?! Donkey: That's right! That's your half and this is my half. Maui: Oh, your half? Really?! Donkey: Yes, my half. I helped rescue a princess. I did half of Shrek's work. And I get half of this island. Now, hand me that big ol' rock, the one that's shaped like your head. (Maui pulls out his damaged fish hook. Donkey headbutts the damaged fish hook, and the two struggle over it) Maui: Back off! Donkey: No, you back off! Maui: Leave me alone! Donkey: Not a chance! Maui: Let go, Donkey! Donkey: You let go! Maui: Stubborn donkey! Donkey: Phony demigod! Maui: Fine! (Maui pushes Donkey with his damaged fish hook, tripping Donkey over, and walks away) Donkey: Hey, hey, come back here, this argument isn't over yet! Maui: Well, I say this argument is already over! (Donkey starts following him around the island) Donkey: Uh-uh! Ever since you met Moana, you were always mean, mean, mean! Well, guess what? Now it's my turn! So you be quiet and pay attention! (Just as Maui was about to walk away, Donkey jumps in front of him. Maui walks in another direction) Donkey: You are mean to Moana, you insult Moana and you don't appreciate anything that she does! You're always pushing her around or pushing her away! Maui: Oh, yeah? If I treated Moana so badly, how come you're on the island with me?! Donkey: Because that's what friends do, THEY FORGIVE EACH OTHER! Maui: Oh, yeah. You're right, Donkey. I forgive you... FOR TAKING MOANA'S SIDE INSTEAD OF MINE!!!!! (Maui enters the cave behind him and slams a huge rock behind him) Donkey: (groans in frustration) You're so wrapped up on your fish hook, pal! And you're afraid of your own feelings! Maui: Go away! Donkey: See?! There you go, doing it again, like you did to Moana back on the boat! And all she wanted you to do is restore the Heart of Te Fiti! Maui: Really? Really?! She almost had me killed! I told her to turn back, but she never listens! Donkey: Well, Shrek had problems like this before, and I helped him solve his problems with the princess, who... uh, loves him. (After a brief silence, Maui comes out of the cave) Maui: She... loves me? What do you mean she loves me? (Donkey turns his back on Maui) Donkey: Uh-uh! No way! If you won't talk to Moana, you won't talk to me! All you care about is your fish hook, right? Right?! Maui: Donkey! Donkey: No! Maui: Alright, look, I'm sorry, OK? (Donkey turns his head back to raise an eyebrow, and looks away again. Maui sighs) Maui: I'm sorry. I guess we're both right. I guess I really am a big fake demigod. Can you forgive me? Donkey: Hey, that's what friends are for, right? Maui: Right. Friends? Donkey: Friends. (Maui and Donkey shake on it) Maui: So, uh, is it true Moana loves me? Donkey: What are you asking me for? Why don't you go on and ask her? Maui: (gasps in shock) Oh, no! She's probably going to restore the Heart of Te Fiti herself! We'll never save her in time! Donkey: (laughs) Never fear. For when there's a will, there's a way, and I know a way! (Donkey whistles loudly, and Maui looks up to see Dragon and the Dronkeys flying overhead) Maui: (sees the Dronkeys fly around him) Donkey? Did you just...? Donkey: (laughs) Like I said, celebrity marriages never last, do they? Maui: (laughs) Aw, come here, you little ball of fur with hooves! (gives him a noogie) Donkey: All right, all right. No one likes a butt-kisser. All right, hop on and hold on tight. I haven't had a chance to install the seat belts yet. Maui: (laughs) CHEE-HOOOOOOOO!!!!! (Maui climbs up Dragon. Dragon lifts Donkey up with her hand. They take off, soaring through the clouds and to Te Ka)
