Louis Armstrong was a superstar trumpeter and singer - and truly the one and only Ambassador of Jazz. Wonderful World: The Best of Louis Armstrong is out now!
In 1960, “Ambassador Satch” toured Africa on a three-month State Department mission during the Cold War. Crowds packed stadiums, streets filled, and the New York Times reported that in Accra, 100,000 people erupted the moment he started to play. His influence was so strong that during a crisis in Katanga, both sides agreed to a one-day truce just to hear him perform. Louis later joked that he “stopped a civil war.” A legacy bigger than jazz! ✨ 📷: Bettman, Louis Armstrong House Museum
