Should a deaf man with no vestibular balance drive through the chaotic streets of Jakarta, Indonesia looking for wildlife and urban nature? ABSOLUTELY!
Join me as I enjoy getting Mostly Lost in the largest city on the planet. This channel has three core elements: Mostly Lost - a series of urban adventure and discovery, The Lives of Troop Bravo - an intimate look into the daily lives and struggles of an urban troop of wild long-tailed macaques in North Jakarta, and my Wildlife Archives - video and stories from 20 years as a wildlife photographer and documentary filmmaker.
Jakarta, Indonesia is my chosen home, and I LOVE living here, among 42 million other people. There's vast beauty and incredible biodiversity in the mega city, and I aim to see it all!
*** I am an amateur ecologist. My informal observations of monkeys and other animals are a hobby. I create videos for fun and to share my knowledge. I will not accept sponsorship for my monkey watching hobby. ***

Rick Wood's Nature Aware
I'm really excited to premiere Mostly Lost as a new series. I've traveled to and lived in various countries my entire life. Seeing different cultures, flora and fauna species, and landscapes never loses its appeal.
I can't recall just how many times I've sat somewhere and thought to myself, "Wow, I came upon THIS while I was mostly lost!"
From the Sahara Desert to the lush foothills of Kilimanjaro, from Chengdu to Istanbul, among the rafts of sea otters in Monterey Bay to hiking with black bears in the Olympic Peninsula - the destination was simply being there.

Rick Wood's Nature Aware
Starting in January 2026 (right now, possibly Jan. 15th), I will roll out a new series: Mostly Lost. The focus of Mostly Lost is connecting the largest city in the world - Jakarta - to everyday nature and wildlife. Sometimes, it will focus on people who find natural elements among the urban landscape. Other times, I'll go looking for historical/cultural connections to being Nature Aware in the modern mega city. Every episode will have discovery and, sometimes, finding my way out of being Mostly Lost!
If you're a fan of @ItchyBoots or @MaxRoving style visual journeys I think you'll enjoy my new series, too!

Some of this footage has never been seen before! We were surrounded by Great White Sharks, and they were on the hunt for elephant seals. Check out this amazing new video from my documentary filmmaker days!

I'm not always sure how people perceive me and my passions towards animal conservation.
It's difficult to articulate exactly "why" I've been involved in many projects aimed at saving wildlife.
There's the obvious reason: life is sacred. All life. From critically endangered to least concern status, biodiversity is a fragile component of our world's life sustaining capabilities.
But, the stay awake until three in the morning worrying about Southern Resident Orcas, Florida Manatees, Kemps Ridley Sea Turtles, Black Rhinos, Sumatran Orangutans, or my dear Troop Bravo isn't just about general concern.
Dying species are an existential scream that echoes within the core of my being. I FEEL it. In my bones.
I was born into a world on fire.
I saw a baby water monitor lizard today. As I drove through the neighborhood on my scooter the tiny reptile scrambled to get from one side of the sewer to the opposite side. It was beautiful. About a foot-long, with vibrant yellow spots on it's torso. At most a few weeks old.
That I live in a neighborhood rife with wildlife is not lost on me. Monitor lizards, bats, palm civets and breathtaking tropical butterflies are all part of our home. An urban oasis of adaptive species.
There's hope in survival, but it's tenuous. We're becoming accustomed to the loss. The shifting baseline. We don't tell enough stories of catching fireflies in our hands. Of nights filled with the chorus of frogs. Of skies clear and blue like an endless sapphire. Of being able to predict weather by watching the migratory birds fly overhead. Of the rainbow colors of coral reefs. Of snorting manatees rubbing against the dangling soles of our feet. Of the feeling that we were winning the war against self destruction.
The world is still on fire. And, I'm tasked with doing everything I can, for the rest of my days, with fighting that conflagration. So that something is left. So that maybe, enough remains.
I think that's as close as I'll come to explaining why I'm dedicating my existence to conservation.
