Wool Needles Hands

Hello hello! Just a quick note to let you know there won't be any new videos on the channel this week.

Our family is in Alaska for a reunion, so I'm taking a short break from filming and editing while we soak up the time together.

I'll be back next week with new videos, and I'm already looking forward to getting back into the dye studio for a gorgeous round of FFTP sock sets.

In the meantime, I'll still be sharing little glimpses from the trip over on Patreon...photos, short updates, and a few blog-style posts if you'd like to follow along behind the scenes.

Hope you're all having a wonderful week, and I'll see you back here very soon!

Don’t mind me as I share (again) this new podcast hosted by two of the most important people in my life: my brother Tyler and my SIL Jessica (you may know her already ☺️). This second video of theirs just brings back so many feelings of complicated, unrequited, or lost love in the form of musical compilations while also being irresistibly charming and thoroughly enjoyable. I’ll be front row at the Play Record Podcast every time they upload. 😎

Upcoming Q&A!

Jessica (my sister-in-law) and I may be separated by a few hundred miles, but that hasn't stopped us from spending an alarming amount of time talking about knitting.

We're planning to hop on FaceTime this week and record another Wool Needles Hands podcast together, and we'd love to include some questions from all of you.

We'll certainly be talking about current projects, future cast-ons, sweater dreams, knitting plans, and whatever rabbit holes we happen to wander into along the way, but I'd also love to hear what's on your mind.

Leave your questions below and we'll answer as many as we can during the recording.

Can't wait! See you then!

Branden and I are discussing what even makes a book a good book over ‪@GoodBooksLately‬ or if it’s all in the eye of the beholder. It’s a fun one!

What makes a book a "good" book? We hash it out.

I've had such a wonderful time filming with Jessica these past couple of weeks. Truly one of those creative experiences that I'll remember for a long time.

We carried the conversation over into this week's Patreon After Show, where we sat down together with a project in mind and spent some time dreaming, planning, and generally enjoying the kind of knitting conversation that always seems to lead somewhere unexpected.

And speaking of exciting things...

I'm currently working behind the scenes on our very first Wool Needles Hands Patreon Maker's Meetup (via Google Meet)! I'm still putting the details together, but I'm thrilled to share that Jessica will be joining me for the inaugural meetup. Having one of my favorite people involved in this next chapter of the community feels especially fitting.

I have a feeling we're building something really special here.

More details very soon. Check out the Patreon for more!

Join my SIL Jessica and me for a cozy chat about first sweaters, being a new knitter, and how to navigate self-doubt as a maker. Ir's a good one and I'm so happy we had the opportunity to do it!

My sister (in law) Jessica joins me this week on the couch for a sit and chat where we discuss first sweaters, knitting jitters, self-doubt as a maker, and what it means to be a knitter (and who’s “earned” the right to call themselves one…spoiler alert: who are we to say?) We’ll also be filming an after show follow up for the Patreon! It was such a memorable experience for me and truly an honor. Can’t wait to share it with you.

Apparently a tiny bird kit from the 1960s has now opened a portal in my brain and I would like to formally request that everyone send me photo/documentation of their:

* vintage craft kits
* strange hobby objects
* unfinished projects
* oddly sincere little leisure artifacts
* stories about quietly making things at kitchen tables

Along with any anecdotes, experiences, touching memories you’d like to include, etc.

Thank you for your cooperation during this important time.

PS: I may include your story and photos in an upcoming video. Please let me know in your email if you’d like me to use your name, social handle, both, or if you would like to remain anonymous.

A special thank you to fiber artist and researcher Emily Robison of The Woven World / Sea Silk Project for her years of work researching and documenting modern sea silk and byssus fiber production.

Several of the images featured in my recent sea silk video belong to Emily and are now properly credited in the video description. Her research was originally published in Ply Magazine’s “Place” Issue #41 (Summer 2023) and later expanded through support from the Center for Craft.

If you were fascinated by the topic and want to learn more directly from someone actively preserving and experimenting with this rare craft tradition, I highly encourage you to explore her work here:

I’m very grateful for the thoughtful conversation that came out of this, and I’m excited to continue exploring material culture and textile history with even greater care and collaboration moving forward.
