Today is World AIDS Day.
South Africa once lived through the worst HIV/AIDS crisis on earth. What pulled the country out of it was not government policy, but people. Activists. Patients. Mothers. Doctors. Lawyers. And above all, the Treatment Action Campaign.

TAC saved more than a million lives. They confronted denialism, exposed preventable deaths, took the state to court and won. Their work forced one of the biggest public health turnarounds in modern history. Yet their victory is barely remembered, and often erased from the story of South Africa’s democracy.

This carousel breaks down what happened, what TAC achieved, and why this history rarely makes the news.
Because progress can be reversed. Funding can be cut. Political memory fades. But public health depends on people knowing the truth and defending it.

On World AIDS Day, we honour those who fought for treatment access, and we acknowledge what is at risk now as global politics threaten HIV programmes across the continent.

Campaign For Free Expression

The Campaign for Free Expression (CFE) welcomes the decision of the Praktiseer Magistrates’ Court to set aside the protection order previously granted against freelance journalist Thomo Nkgadima. The ruling affirms that South Africa’s Protection from Harassment Act cannot be weaponised to obstruct legitimate newsgathering, nor used as a tool by actors seeking to escape scrutiny.
