What makes a weird animal weird? Once a month, hosts Hank Green and Sarah Suta introduce you to a new bizarre beast and explore the many answers to this question.
If you want to take a bizarre beast home, there’s a pin club for that. Check out our trailer for more information and subscribe to the pin club here: complexly.store/products/bizarre-beasts-pin-subscr…
New episodes go up the first Monday of every month. If you’re already subscribed, you’ll get the pin for that month around the time the episode goes live, and you’re automatically signed up for the next month! Subscriptions are open all the time, but if you want this month's pin to be your first one, you need to subscribe by the 20th of the month! New subscribers will receive their first pin in the middle of the month, and then keep getting pins whenever a new video goes up!

If you guessed okapi, you're right!
European explorers frequented the rainforest in the 1800s to find all kinds of mystic creatures, and one was particularly compelling to them: The African Unicorn (aka the okapi).

Our next bizarre beast was specifically requested by YOU*. It was once believed to be a cryptid critter, roaming the rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
*Folks in the comments, many of our real-life friends, and even the man who recently led the Complexly staff on their walking tour of New Orleans.

Tomorrow is the last day to get yourself a braconid wasp pin! After that our vault becomes its new host, and you won't see it again until it eats its way out of there.
Better sign up for the pin club now just to be safe.
Did we mention it glows in the dark?

Our braconid wasp pin artist is Sage Friss!
Sage is a Missoula based artist who grew up in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Montana. He's deeply connected to the world around him and inspired by nature. Spending time watching bugs live their lives has always been a valued activity for him. His work largely features realistic scenes within imagined realities. He is a self taught artist.
I really enjoyed designing this wasp pin, especially because through the process I learned so much about the life cycles and diversity of Braconid wasps. Wasps are amazing creatures that are so often maligned. They deserve our respect.

If you guessed braconid wasps, you're right! Braconid wasps are parasitoids, which is a type of parasitism with a slightly different outcome. The host of a regular parasite is certainly harmed but rarely killed outright. The host of a parasitoid, however, becomes a dual-purpose incubator and food source for its offspring. https://youtu.be/LmQNrI4aIzo

The survival of this family of insects is so intertwined with a virus that they partly share a genome. This extreme level of teamwork lets these beasts live their best parasitoid lives. Can you guess what the next bizarre beast is?
