Long before Cope2 name appeared in galleries, campaigns and video games, he was a kid in the Bronx staring at graffiti-covered trains and dreaming of putting his own name up there.

He started writing in the late ’70s, became closely associated with the 4 line, helped build Kids Destroy into Kings Destroy, and eventually took his graffiti far beyond the subway system.

Then came the video games.

His work appeared in Grand Theft Auto IV and he was also featured in Marc Ecko’s Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure.

Not bad for a kid who just wanted to write his name on a train.

Swipe through the story of COPE2.

Some artists start with a canvas.

Vile started with a spray can at 14.

Born and raised in Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal, Rodrigo “Vile” has spent nearly three decades pushing his work far beyond graffiti.

From murals and street art to exhibitions and incredibly detailed portraits, his work blends graffiti with drawing, illustration, painting and a whole arsenal of techniques.

And the list of people and places he has painted is seriously long.

Swipe through to discover the artist behind the walls.
