As a plastic surgeon, I hear and see some of the craziest stories. Here is one that happened not that long ago:
A female patient was interested in a breast augmentation, so she went to a local cosmetic center that advertises themselves as a top cosmetic destination. She consulted with a "board-certified" surgeon whom she assumed was a real plastic surgeon. She wasn't.
The patient coordinator pushed her to get the operation soon, informing her that if she put the deposit down now, she would get a special price. Feeling the pressure to sign up, she paid the deposit and planned to have the surgery in a few weeks in their in-office surgery center. She and her surgeon jointly decided on placing saline implants through her armpit into each breast.
The patient arrived for her operation, which she was informed went smoothly. She was wrapped in an ACE wrap and told to remove it in a couple days and shower. When that day came, she unwrapped her chest and, to her horror, discovered that her implants weren't in her breasts. They were stuck in her armpits!
She called the surgery center, and the receptionist told her to come in the next day to see the doctor. When she showed her surgeon her armpit implants, she looked flummoxed and told her, "I've never seen this before."
It's not surprising that she hadn't seen it before since she wasn't a real plastic surgeon. She was an OPTHALMOLOGIST!
So, the eye doctor told her that she would call in the senior cosmetic surgeon to take a look. The senior doctor came in a few minutes later and, after seeing her armpit implants, shook his head and said that he hadn't seen anything like this before, either, and had no idea what to do to fix it.
This also was not surprising because he also wasn't a real plastic surgeon, but an ER DOCTOR!
She ended up leaving their offices without any actionable advice since they were the only two doctors who worked there. Eventually she found her way to a real plastic surgeon who was able to fix her botched implant surgery.
Crazy story, right?
Unfortunately, stories like hers happen way too often, with unethical doctors ditching their chosen specialties to masquerade as real plastic surgeons. I've seen so many botched patients over the years, it's really concerning.
If you're interested in hearing more fascinating cosmetic surgery tales (most of which I personally witnessed), then check out my latest podcast episode called Shocking But True Plastic Surgery Stories! These stories include:
- Arm lift gone wrong so surgeon blames anesthesiologist
- Surgeons performing secret operations during quarantine
- Unethical surgeon stopping surgery before it's done

Have you heard of Regenerative Medicine?
It represents a field of medicine where the patient's own natural, regenerative abilities are used to heal the body and/or rejuvenate it. I cover how to do this using food, supplements, intermittent fasting, and skin care (the principles of Autojuvenation) in my best-selling book Younger For Life.
But regenerative medicine contains a LOT more. Stem cell therapy has traditionally been the cornerstone of regenerative medicine, and I believe will be the future of medicine. However, there are a lot of cutting-edge regenerative treatments you may not know about.
Here are some of the most interesting:
⚡ Shockwave Therapy: Healing Through Sound
This treatment may sound intense — it literally uses acoustic waves that feel like a mini jackhammer on the body — but it’s non-invasive and surprisingly comfortable.
How it works:
- The device sends sound waves into the tissue to create microtrauma.
- This stimulates blood vessel growth and triggers healing responses.
- It also reduces inflammation and pain.
- Essentially it tricks your body into thinking it's injured, so it sends in healing cells.
Used for:
- Joint pain and tendon injuries
- Sexual health (for both men and women)
- Even cellulite!
🧲 PEMF Therapy: Magnetic Energy That Calms and Heals
PEMF stands for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy. Patients lie on a mat or use a localized device that delivers gentle magnetic pulses into the body.
Benefits include:
- Reduced inflammation
- Improved circulation
- Faster recovery from surgery or injury
- Can be done at home or in a clinic
💨 Ozone Therapy: Supercharging Your Blood
Ozone therapy involves removing a small amount of your blood, mixing it with ozone (a super-oxygenated form of oxygen), and re-infusing it.
Why people try it:
- Claims to boost oxygen delivery and energy
- May reduce fatigue and brain fog
- Acts like a wellness “reboot”
- Some report it's like hyberbaric oxygen therapy but without the chamber
The Big Picture: Regeneration Without Surgery
All these therapies — though different in delivery — work toward the same goal: helping your body heal itself. Whether you’re looking to reduce pain, improve skin, boost energy, or enhance intimacy, regenerative treatments are a fascinating new category of therapies to consider.
These come with little to no downtime and can be combined with traditional medicine for a holistic approach to feeling (and looking) your best.
Want to learn more about regenerative treatments, including how Stem Cell Therapy is currently being used in the United States? On my latest podcast I'm joined by a regenerative medicine specialist to discuss all the treatments above AND much more on the episode titled, Erase Wrinkles, Boost Energy & Ignite Your Sex Drive – The Best Regenerative Therapies with Dr. Amy Killen.

We all know Botox can be used to treat our facial wrinkles, like crow's feet, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles. But I bet you didn't know these three secret applications of Botox that can be super effective!
1. Turn a Frown Upside Down - If Botox is injected in a tiny amount under each corner of the mouth, it can reverse a permafrown. This works by weakening the depressor anguli oris muscle which pulls the corners of the mouth downward. When 2-3 units of Botox are injected into it, the muscles relax, and the corners lift up!
2. Flip Your Lip - When a couple units of Botox are injected into the upper lip it can cause the lip to "flip" outward, making it look subtly fuller. Check out the photo of my administrative assistant Megan before and after her Lip Flip. Our expert injectors do this treatment all the time.
3. Nefertiti Lift - This is the name given to a subtle lift you can get when Botox is injected into the platysmal bands of the neck and just below the jawline. These injections relax the neck muscles which pull downward, resulting in an uplifting of the lower face and neckline. Note: it's very subtle and can prevent you from making certain extreme facial expressions.
Interested in learning more surprising uses of Botox? There is a LOT more that Botox can do, and some Botox treatments being done that really shouldn't be (Scrotox?!?!). I cover all of this on my latest podcast, including:
- Botox to treat a gummy smile
- Traptox (aka Barbie Botox)
- Botox for excessive sweating
- Botox injections "down there"
- And a lot more!

People comment to me all the time about how my skin looks great, especially for a man in his early 50's. However, like virtually everyone, I have issues with my skin. It's definitely NOT perfect.
I started having issues with perioral dermatitis approximately 15 years ago. This is a dermatitis that occurs around the mouth and lower face, presenting with areas of redness and itching. It flared up whenever I applied overly aggressive, drugstore brand skin care products.
I successfully treated my perioral dermatitis by taking low dose anti-inflammatories and exchanging the conventional, aggressive skin care products for my YOUN Beauty brand skin care (click here to view the store: bit.ly/3FNJ1yp). I haven't had issues with perioral dermatitis in many years (knock on wood!).
Currently my issue is with rosacea. This is a chronic skin condition characterized by patchy areas of redness and flushing. It often has identifiable triggers like sun exposure, alcohol, and spicy foods. My rosacea presents itself as patchy redness of my cheeks.
I've been unable to pinpoint any obvious triggers, and none of the following treatments have been helpful:
- Dietary changes like reducing gluten and dairy
- Pulse dye laser treatments
- Red light therapy (tried it a long time ago, maybe will try again)
- Prescription medications like Soolantra
Interestingly, the last time my rosacea was this bad was several years ago, and guess what eliminated it? Not any of the interventions above. It was CHANGING MY PILLOW. Not my pillowcase, which I change every week, but my actual pillow. Yes, changing to a new pillow made my rosacea go away. 🤷♂️
Unfortunately, changing my pillow didn't work this time, so I'm currently trying very low dose doxycycline, which is an antibiotic that creates an anti-inflammatory effect when taken at low doses. It also appears to have minimal effects on the gut microbiome at these levels.
My rosacea seems to be slowly improving, but if it doesn't resolve like it has in the past, I might try a special topical compounded medication from my dermatologist colleague Dr. Emily Levin. We talk all about my rosacea issues (and how she recommends treating them) along with the below topics on this week's Hot Topics in Cosmetic Surgery podcast episode!
- Face BBL's - are they a real thing?
- The Carnivore Diet
- The Internal Bra in breast surgery
- Cardi B's new piercing in her "behind"
- And a lot more!

I've spent the last 20 years of my life writing books and raising my children. With my last book, Younger for Life, in the rear view mirror, and my kids grown up and doing their own thing, I recently found myself with extra time I never had before. Although I have a lot of casual friends where I live, almost all of my really good friends live elsewhere.
So several months ago I decided to volunteer at the local animal rescue, Michigan Animal Rescue League (MARL). Most weekends I spend a couple hours with dogs who need homes, bringing them for walks, playing with them in the yard, and sometimes just sitting with them on my lap. It's been one of the most rewarding experiences ever. Bonding with them, even ever so briefly, and then seeing them find their forever homes is just the coolest thing.
Every single dog in the photo collage has been adopted, except ONE. The dog in the middle photo and the second frame is named Rider, and he's a 3 year old Catahoula Leopard Dog/Hound Mix who's been at MARL and in foster for almost a year after being brought in as a stray. Rider is best described as a gentle giant. He's shy, but when he gets to know you he loves to play, give kisses, and get back rubs. He would be a perfect addition to a single person wanting a lifelong companion or a family without cats or children under the age of 12.
Can you help me find Rider a home? It would be so amazing to come in one day and see his name on MARL's "Adopted" list! This sweet soul deserves to have a loving forever home. I've put the link to his MARL profile here: marl.org/animal/rider-2/
And if you're ever thinking about getting a dog or cat, please consider adopting one from your local rescue or shelter. There are so many loving animals that need homes. Save a life today and you will be a hero forever.
And if you recognize one of the dogs in my collage as your adoptee (such as Muppet, Greta, King, Bella, and others), THANK YOU for saving their lives! It was my privilege to get to know them, even for just a very short time.
