I grew up in Portsmouth with a Maltese mum, and there were many nearby Maltese families. Between us, there were numerous local nights out, football and big Sunday gatherings.

I didn't realise at the time but I now know that my little corner of Portsmouth was actually part of a much bigger Maltese story.

I’ve just finished my latest video about it... and some of the connections and observations have surprised me.

🚨 BIG MALTA TAX CHANGES FOR 2027!

Malta will be changing the rules (again) for some specific programmes. Changes take effect on 1st January 2027.

In simple terms, the rules are getting much tougher and notably more expensive from 1/1/27. Just to be clear, there are NO changes regarding the typical EU and non-EU work-related routes.

Malta is soon replacing legacy schemes like the MRP (Malta Retirement Programme) and the GRP (Global Residence Programme) with a single framework called the "Individual Tax Programme" (ITP).

The MPRP (Malta Permanent Residence Programme) remains unchanged.

If you are considering retirement under the current MRP, the following changes will soon apply... and things are about to get substantially more expensive:


✅ Minimum Tax: Doubling from €7,500 to €15,000 per year.

✅ No More Regional Discounts: The cheaper property and rent thresholds for South Malta and Gozo are completely scrapped.

✅ Property Purchase: A universal €700,000 minimum nationwide threshold applies.

✅ Property Rent: Increasing to €14,000 per year as a minimum.

✅ Upfront Fees: Initial application fees rise from €2,500 to €8,500!

✅ Expiry & Renewal Fees: Status is no longer open-ended. This means that status expires every 5 years and will require a €2,500 renewal fee to maintain it.

⏰ Beat the Clock: If you submit your application by 31st December 2026, you lock in the current lower rates, thresholds and regional discounts until 1st January 2032.

✅ As I stated, there are no changes for EU citizens (unless you were specifically opting to choose the MRP) or non-EU citizens applying for the Single Permit, KEI, SEI etc.
