YouTube stole my money... A few months ago I made my first ever sailing video and this video went pretty viral for me with now about 450k views.
About a month after posting the video I receive a copyright claim from Sony Music regarding one of the songs used in the video. I had full rights to use the song via my subscription to Artlist. (anyone can basically throw around copyright claims)
I disputed the claim of course, sending my license to the song etc.
Their response (Sony) was just 'No'. So the claim continued. YouTube has a very hands off approach in these cases and really does nothing.
While the video was under copyright claim, ads were still showing, so the video obviously still made money. This money was either held in escrow by YouTube or paid to Sony. I haven't gotten a clear answer on this.
FINALLY after 1 month Sony Music removed their wrongful claim, so I of course expected to get this revenue. I talked to YouTube support and they said yes, it'll arrive next month.
Of course it didn't. Then another month, same response. Now, YouTube's final response:
"In this case, there is no revenue available to release because this situation did not involve a dispute resolution."
We're only talking about around $500 in missing ad revenue. But it is obviously about the principle. Either YouTube has this money, or they paid it to Sony Music for a wrongful copyright claim.
