One of the general readings I’ve listened to today told me to pull cards. So I pulled cards. Since I tend to pull a lot of major arcana I decided to pull a different way today to see if it might be my style that just results in that more. Even completely changing the way I pull cards I ended up pulling 2 major Arcana.
A standard tarot deck has 78 cards, of which 22 are Major Arcana and 56 are Minor Arcana.
If you draw 5 cards at random and you want exactly 2 Major Arcana, this is a classic “draw without replacement” situation. We use a hypergeometric probability. My former undergraduate statistics professor days coming in handy here.
How to calculate it
Number of ways to choose 2 Major Arcana out of 22:
(22 2) = 231
Number of ways to choose 3 Minor Arcana out of 56:
(56 3) = 27,720
Total number of possible 5-card draws from 78 cards:
(78 5) = 21,111,090
Now multiply the favorable outcomes and divide by all possible hands:
6,403,320/21,111,090 ≈ 0.3033
A 30.33% chance to do that.
