Crime rings have targeted Ceva Logistics in eight separate incidents over the past year, stealing tractor trailers filled with high-value electronics worth over $18.3 million, according to a source with inside knowledge. The thefts resulted from repeated security policy failures, often tied to outsourcing loads to unvetted motor carriers and leaving trailers in unsecured warehouse yards, the source told FreightWaves. Ceva Logistics, the sixth-largest third-party logistics provider globally by revenue, is not alone, as freight-related crime is rising. Verisk CargoNet reports a 27% year-over-year increase in cargo theft in North America in 2024, with $455 million in goods stolen across 3,625 incidents, though the actual number is likely higher due to underreporting for reputational or security reasons. Verisk provides risk management services to the global insurance industry, and CargoNet facilitates secure information sharing to prevent cargo theft and recover stolen freight.
