Is the World Experiencing the Second Trading Card Game Renaissance?

What is a trading card game renaissance? Trading Card Games as we know them were first popularized in the 1990’s. With the release of Magic the Gathering in 1993, Pokemon TCG in 1996, and the Yugioh trading card game in 1999. People all around the world would be introduced to these new games that relied on cards that weren't the traditional 52-pack of playing cards or collectible sports cards. The major success of these three trading card game companies led to an economic boom surrounding the trading and collectible card game industry in the early 2000.’s.

Almost every franchise had to cash in on the outrageous success that trading card games had become, whether it be American made media such as the Shrek movies or Japanese based comics such as Dragon Ball Z. Retailers such as Walmart and Target would begin to carry these products to try to reach the high demand for the trading card games. The increase in demand and want for a consumable game popularized the creation of local game stores. Stores whose sole purpose was to buy, sell, and trade trading card games alongside hold a space for players to play in local competitive tournaments.

The great recession of 2008 had a huge impact on the trading card game industry. Eventually the overwhelming amount of products would begin to highly oversaturate the medium and only a handful of games would survive the great recession and thus the trading card game crash happened. All of the companies that cashed in on the trading card game were beginning to lose money as people did not have the additional funds to pay for non necessities such as trading card games. The big three Magic The Gathering, Pokemon TCG, and Yugioh, would stand the test of time, but not without undergoing large changes within the games. All three would try “new” mechanics or revitalize old favorites in an attempt to bring players back to the game. As the economy slowly recovered the big three would maintain their spots on the trading card game hierarchy.

In 2020, when the world shuts down to covid, a lot of interesting things begin to happen for the trading card game industry. People were staying home more and looking for things to do while everyone was in quarantine and a lot of people began to look back into trading card games. Graded cards, pack opening videos on youtube and celebrities such as Logan Paul and Post Malone really helped repopularize trading card games to the masses. A large influx of people were now going to their local game stores and big box retailers to purchase pokemon cards in search of chase cards such as Charizard. This alone was able to help revitalize the trading card game industry as the world began to recover.

Since 2020, Flesh and Blood TCG, Meta Zoo TCG, Digmon card game, My Hero Academia collectible card game, and the One Piece card game have all been released. These companies hopped on the revitalization of the trading card game market since the pandemic inspiring the second Trading Card Game Renaissance. More players are attending their local game stores than ever before to look for these new games based off of these popular franchises. Target even sells all of the above-mentioned trading card games, excluding the one piece card game as it hasn't launched yet.

The success of these new trading card game franchises and the big three have proven that trading card games are not just a fad that are here one week and gone the next; that they are here to stay. The DigiBros Team welcomes all of the new and returning players to trading card games as the world ushers in the Second Trading Card Game Renaissance!

The One Piece Card Game has a refreshing take on a classic trading card game formula.

One Piece Card Game is the newest trading card game to be released by Bandai, who have also created two other successful trading card games, Dragon Ball Super Card Game and Digimon Card Game. One Piece Card Game had its super pre-release, the first and second weekends in October of 2022 where participants could purchase and play the four starter decks. The red straw hat crew, which is based off of One Piece’s main protagonist Monkey D Luffy and his pirate crew, the Straw Hats. Green Worst Generation consists of fellow rookie pirates that rival the straw hats, most notably Traflager Law and Eustas “Captain” Kid. The Blue Seven Warlords of the Sea, which are strong pirates within the One Piece world-some good and some evil. Last but not least is the purple Animal Kingdom pirates following the manga and anime’s most recent antagonist, Kaido “King of the Beasts” and his crew of deadly animal pirates.

One Piece Card game takes inspiration from several different trading card games to combine into one refreshing take on some of these classic trading card game formulas. Bandai took inspiration from their own game, Dragon Ball Super Card Game, with leaders being present on the game field from the very beginning. These leaders act as the captain of their ship to fight off against the opposing captains and pirates. The color of the leader dictates how much life the player starts with at the beginning of the game and what colors the cards in one's deck can have.

Don!!! Is the Japanese sound of the drums being pounded alongside being the very first thing that the watchers of the anime hear when they watch the very first episode of one piece. The drums of liberation are an important aspect within the O.ne Piece story and don act as a recourse for the game. Magic the Gathering has land which can be used to create mana to pay for one’s cards. Don!!! Do the same thing, but Don!!! It is kept in its own deck outside of the main deck. Players of hearthstone and force of will may find this familiar as having a recourse deck being separate from your main deck, so that way you won’t get “mana screwed” as you will gain additional resources every turn whether you draw into them or not. This aspect of the game really separates itself from trading card games such as Magic the gathering and Pokémon, where if you don’t draw the correct land or energy, you can’t play. One Piece Card Game gives both players the appropriate amount of recourse every turn for enjoyable strategy and friendly back and forth gameplay. The Don!!! Can also be equipped by your leader or characters to gain them additional attack power! Much like an inheritable effect from Bandai’s Digimon Card Game. (edited)

Gameplay One Piece Card Game plays very similar to Bandai’s other two trading card games. Characters cannot attack the turn they are played, set deck of 50 cards, five card hands, and your life is dependent on your leader where Dragon Ball Super card game started with eight life and Digimon card game starts with 5 life. Right now, the four colors play as follows: red is agro, green is mid range, blue is control, and purple is ramp. Red has a lot of cards that buff characters attack or give them “rush” which allows a character to attack the turn it’s played. Green has a lot of cards, allowing the player to either attack twice with their character or leader, or punish the opponent for having suspended characters. Blue has effects that allow the player to put cards the opponent controls either back in the hand or at the bottom of the deck while having more blockers in their deck than all of the other colors. Purple focus on accelerating additional recourses and using strong effects to put Don!!! Back into their Don!!! Deck so they can accelerate more recourse. Each color is distinct from one another with their own play style while being enjoyable to play with.

The full launch of the One Piece Card Game is set to release in December of 2022 in time for the holiday season. Alongside the starter decks, the first set labeled Romance Dawn will be released, allowing players to add even more cards to their collection and decks. The DigiBros team has loved playing in the super pre-release tournaments and casual kitchen table games and are looking forward to the full release in December!
