In 2012, James Cameron dropped seven miles to the deepest point on Earth, and what he saw through the window was almost nothing. He came back up thinking the bottom of the Mariana Trench was basically dead.

The real discovery didn't happen until more than a year later, when a researcher at Scripps went through his raw footage frame by frame and found the life he'd driven right past.

There are three active volcanoes beside the Mariana Trench. Here's what Nautilus found on them.

🌋 Just off the deepest trench on Earth, a robot filmed water pouring out of the seafloor hotter than boiling, with droplets of liquid carbon dioxide rising through it. And that was the calm part.

In 2025, the exploration ship E/V Nautilus spent 21 days and 115 hours of diving on the chain of volcanoes beside the Mariana Trench, one of the most volcanically active places on the planet. This video follows three of them. Toto Seamount, where the hydrothermal vents leak rare droplets of liquid carbon dioxide and the water runs hotter than boiling. Daikoku, home to the only flatfish on Earth known to live nowhere but the slopes of active volcanic vents. And Ahyi, an underwater volcano that physically grew a new summit in three years. Along the way: entire ecosystems running on chemicals and darkness instead of sunlight, in a place almost nobody ever sees.
