Most visitors to Yushima Tenman-gu focus on the main hall and the thousands of exam ema (votive plaques) — but tucked within the same grounds is Sasazuka Inari Shrine, a small subsidiary shrine dedicated to Inari, the deity of harvests and good fortune. What catches the eye is the dense row of red lanterns lining the shrine's approach. In Shinto tradition, Inari shrines are often identified by these red lanterns and fox (kitsune) statues, as foxes are considered divine messengers of Inari. Easy to walk past, but worth a deliberate pause.
