Hacking is far more common than most people realize—especially in 2026.
If you suspect your phone or computer has been compromised, most of us simply don’t have the time or expertise to investigate thoroughly. The easiest and most reliable step is to take it to Geek Squad (or a similar professional service); they can quickly determine if it’s been hacked.
Online, we all interact with strangers, and it’s natural to assume others share our values and moral compass—but that’s not always the case. Many people never disclose if they have hacking skills or a criminal background. In the past six months, I’ve learned just how crucial it is to stay cautious online. There’s a big difference between paranoia and smart, practical awareness.
I used to be far too trusting, especially during years of podcasting. You don’t expect people to be malicious, and sometimes individuals act out because they’re victims of their own circumstances. Navigating that is complicated, but it’s opened my eyes to how oblivious many of us are to how easily devices can be hacked and personal information exploited. My generation often has a false sense of security from antivirus programs and built-in browser protections.
We first realized my phone was compromised when calls kept cutting out—every few seconds there would be complete silence. It was maddening trying to figure out if it was just bad service or something worse.
I’ve since learned: **never open attachments or links unless they come from a source you completely trust**. Even well-meaning friends can unknowingly share compromised files. I always assumed Apple devices and paid antivirus software (McAfee, Norton) offered top-tier protection, but no solution is bulletproof.
I’m not a high-profile target or involved in anything shady, so I never worried much about this before. But it truly can happen to anyone—especially if your kids are online.
It’s unsettling to know you’ve been hacked, particularly in today’s world. Switching to a MacBook has given me much more peace of mind; Apple’s ecosystem still feels like the strongest option for everyday security.
