Trump Announces U.S.-Denmark Security Agreement Over Greenland

WASHINGTON — September 18, 2026 — President Donald Trump announced Friday that the United States has reached an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that would give Washington a permanent role in securing the strategically important Arctic territory.

Trump said the agreement gives the United States “permanent control” over Greenland’s security and allows the U.S. to address its national security concerns on the island. He also said the United States would begin developing a larger military presence in Greenland.

Under the reported agreement, U.S. adversaries would be barred from establishing military bases or maintaining a military presence in Greenland. Sensitive investments by countries considered U.S. adversaries would also require U.S. approval, according to U.S. officials. (Currently)

The announcement does not mean that Greenland is becoming U.S. territory. Denmark would retain sovereignty over Greenland, while Greenland’s right to self-determination would remain recognized.
