This is Madumo, one of the dominant males of the Xudum Pride, an established coalition in the heart of the Okavango Delta. The images presented here are screenshots captured from video footage by Big Cats 24/7, a research team utilizing cutting edge infrared technology.

In the first image, Madumo charges toward a freshly made kill, asserting his dominance. At 10 years old, Madumo has ruled his pride for over 5 years. Although past his physical prime, the steady availability of food allows him to somewhat maintain a solid, muscular condition.

Image 2 - Madumo dominates during feeding

The second image captures a quintessential moment of lion hierarchy. Madumo feeds first, as is typical among adult males during communal feeding sessions.

Adult males easily dominate all other age-sex classes when feeding at kills Schaller (1972).

(image 2) I've outlined Madumo standing over the carcass, where he's seen growing, roaring and slapping the other members guarding the carcass. The contrast of his massive silhouette against the background highlights his size and unmistakable masculinity, a textbook example of sexual dimorphism among lions.

Two Dominant Sundarbans Tigers -
Big Boss & Kata Male

Image 1: Top (Big boss)
Bottom (Kata male)

Image 2:
The tiger outlined in red represents Big Boss, the former dominant male of a significant portion of the tourism zone in the Indian Sundarbans. This photograph was taken in 2018, when he was approximately 10 years old the final year of a prime wild tiger’s life. The blue outline depicts the Kata Male, the current dominant tiger in that same region (at least partially), photographed in 2025, also at around 10 years of age.

According to observers familiar with the area, it is highly likely that Big Boss is the father of the Kata Male. While the Kata Male is not as bulky or robust as Big Boss, he has successfully maintained control over territory demonstrating that dominance is not solely dependent on body mass.

To further illustrate the physical differences, I’ve created a general outline comparison of both males
(image 2). Despite being at the same age and in healthy condition, Big Boss displays a stockier and more muscular build, whereas his presumed son Kata Male appears more slender and streamlined in form.

This side by side highlights how even among dominant, healthy male tigers, there is notable variation in physical structure. This is a reminder that in the wild, strength, experience, and strategy often play as much of a role in dominance than size.

ARE WILD TIGERS REALLY MAKING A COMEBACK?

Today is World Tiger Day, and while the headlines often focus on extinction, the real story might surprise you!

YES!!! there’s actually good news! Tiger populations are growing, and conservation is working better than most people think.

As of 2024–2025, there are an estimated over 5,000+ wild tigers globally, up from just ~3,200 in 2010. That’s nearly a 74% increase in just over a decade!! Much of this success is thanks to dedicated international efforts, more advanced technology, and expanding tiger landscapes. Tigers are still endangered, but these stats and data still gives us hope for a healthy tiger population!

India leads the global charge with over +3,000 tigers, making up nearly 75% of the world’s wild tiger population. This is a remarkable recovery from 2006, when India had just over 1,400 tigers. That growth confirmed through large scale monitoring and surveys is detailed in “Status of Tigers, Co-predators & Prey in India, 2022”, one of the most comprehensive tiger assessments ever published.

Tigers are also thriving in places like Kaziranga, where the adult population rose from 104 to 148 in just two years, now boasting one of the highest tiger densities on Earth. In Tadoba, tiger numbers and territory usage continue to grow steadily, and in Similipal, nine tiger cubs were recorded in 2024 six of them melanistic, showcasing a genetically rare but healthy breeding population.

India's Project Tiger now oversees 58 reserves as of 2025, and new initiatives like the International Big Cat Alliance are helping unite countries across Asia and beyond to combat poaching and habitat loss. Innovations like AI-powered camera traps, drone surveillance, and landscape corridor planning are also huge upgrades. Plus, grassroots education programs like Wild Scouts are helping rural communities coexist safely with big cats.

Although, the challenges still remain illegal, wildlife trade, human tiger conflict, and shrinking habitats still pose risks. But this year’s data shows that when people together, the tiger has a fighting chance!
