I stumbled upon a "DrDisrespect wholesome moments with fans" shorts yesterday... That made me wish to catch up and see what's he's up to today... Turns out he presented us with this masterpiece. Listen to this...
I’ve long suspected that many AAA Game Developers/Publishers (the big-budget ones) need to put more effort into hiring UX professionals (and in some cases, UI experts too—take Ark: Survival Evolved, for example. It had a terrible interface, which, fortunately, saw some improvement in its "successor" Ascended).
After reading up on this fundamental concept regarding the testing phase, it all makes even more sense! The most recent example we have is Concord (backed by none other than Sony PlayStation, no small thing), which ended up being one of the biggest failures in gaming history—not just in post-launch performance, but especially in sales and peak concurrent player numbers (just over 100... And this is supposed to be an MMO in the vein of Overwatch).
The point is, Concord never really appealed to anyone. You only needed to look at the game’s cover art to sense it was going to flop.
There used to be some doubt, questions like, "Was this some kind of market strategy? Did they actually make more by failing like this? Was Cyberpunk 2077’s launch disaster in 2020 more profitable than if they had delayed and released a fully polished game?"
Now, with this "fail fast to fail cheap" mentality, and knowing how things turned out, it’s pretty clear that they suffered major losses by neglecting this crucial testing phase.
Concord is now being shut down, with refunds offered to buyers. Aside from the financial loss, it also leaves a stain on both the developer and publisher’s reputation.
Wich do YOU think was the bigger letdown?
(Image 1) "Personally, I thought the cover art was generic and unappealing. I didn’t even need to watch a trailer to feel that way. And after seeing gameplay post-launch, my impression only worsened!"
(Image 2) "Let’s not forget the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020, one of the most hyped games ever—coming from the creators of The Witcher 3. It was also one of the biggest launch-day disappointments. While CD Projekt Red has since redeemed themselves, back in 2020, Cyberpunk could have easily been seen as a major scam."
"I don't feel like there's a whole lot of space for a new Dino Crisis game thanks to the success of Capcom's Monster Hunter series", says Shinji Mikami. youtube.com/shorts/oj09DDtwxk...
An article at Eurogamer.net exposed a quick "interview" with Shinji Mikami at #gamescom2024:
"Mikami said he was surprised at the fan reaction to Dino Crisis, but it seems the popularity of Monster Hunter has put him off continuing the series." "I'm very surprised to hear that," said Mikami in relation to fans wanting more Dino Crisis. "The awesomeness of dinosaurs and the stuff you can do with dinosaurs, that's been kind of really nailed down by Monster Hunter in recent years." "So even if I were to decide to make a remake or a new version of Dino Crisis, I don't really feel like there's a whole lot of space for that kind of game right now, just since Monster Hunter has become such a big game. But yeah, it is surprising."
Affectionately called "Resident Evil with dinosaurs" in the 1990s, Dino Crisis is undeniably one of the greatest classics of the PS1 era. Unfortunately, to this day, Capcom has not given the franchise the attention it deserves.
I personally believe it could become something amazing these days if done correctly! Sure, we have Monster Hunter, wich is amazing, but Dino Crisis is set in a Survival Horror environment (and we don't have a tripple A game with that theme at all these days). And we have already seen the success of the Resident Evil Remakes! I love'em...
Do you think it would be a good idea to bring it back? Or would it just kill the nostalgia that lives on?
