It's Christmas in July (Navidad en julio)!

Christmas in July to me is not just a fun holiday theme. It is a time to not receive but give. It is a time to reflect on who Christmas is about, Jesus Christ! We typically celebrate Christmas during the month of December, although Jesus was born during a different time/season. Some scholars say it was during spring. Nonetheless, I just want to share with you Jesus! Jesus pre-existed and was there in the beginning with God and Holy Spirit (John 1:1-5). God foreknew that man would sin. So, there was already a plan to redeem mankind back to God. Consequently, Jesus already being all powerful and royal, took off his deity, put on human flesh, and came down from Heaven to live and dwell amongst us. Holy Spirit implanted him in the virgin Mary's womb and at the appointed time was born in Bethlehem. He was Emanuel, God with us! He taught, performed many miracles, cast out demons, healed the sick, and so forth but ultimately, he laid down his life for us! We were the ones who sinned and God laid on him the iniquity of us all! He was made the propitiation for our sins! Now we can be reconciled back to God, have eternal life and direct access to God's throne of grace! Therefore, whenever we celebrate Christmas or anything in relation to Christmas, remember Jesus! Also, tell someone about him and help someone in need! Amen.

Family, I pray that God prepares your heart to receive what he has to say this week. He is a loving Father. He is a loving God and wants what is best for us. Many times, individuals tend to believe that whenever God speaks a word of correction, it is for somebody else and not them. However, when messages are sent, the Word actually comes to us first! So, while I am writing this, I acknowledge that I am not exempt. Trust me. When I tell you that me and my husband are experiencing everything written from week-to-week real time, believe it! We are right in the middle of it and waiting on God to manifest his promises. Nevertheless, my desire is to please my Father, God and whenever I am called home (be it by rapture or death), I want him to say, “well done thy good and faithful servant!” Therefore, I am encouraged. For the Word comes to rebuke, reprove, and exhort (2 Timothy 4:2). The Apostle Paul can certainly attest to this as he made mention of the Lord’s chastening in Hebrews 12:5-11. God’s chastening is not to condemn us, but to draw us closer and remain in relationship with him. My husband mentions this frequently and he can put it into much better words than I can! Naturally, for those who are parents, you desire the best for your child/children, do you not? Well, our Heavenly Father is the same way and even more so because of the magnitude of his love for us. It shows that we are his and belong to him, and ultimately, helps us to live an abundant, peaceful life.

One would think how all of this relates to this week’s topic. Well, last week we learned about the covenantal ceremony that took place between God and Abram. This was in response to Abram’s question of how he would know that he and his descendants would inherit the promised land. God gave Abram specific instructions as it pertained to which animals to sacrifice and present to him. Previously we did a deep dive of the spiritual connotations behind each of the five animals (Heifer, She-goat, Ram - these specifically at three years old, and a Turtle Dove and Pigeon). We learned that each of those offerings and sacrifices had a common theme, which was for the purpose of consecration and atonement for sin, and ultimately all pointed to our Saviour, Jesus Christ! He was innocent but took on the iniquity of us all! Thank God for Jesus! For we have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb! However, though salvation for us is free, it is certainly not cheap! What will you give in exchange for God’s benefits? We will discover the answer to this question as we continue exploring Genesis 15 and the relationship between God and Abam with his promises reaffirmed, a covenant established, and oath declared.

The Divine Covenant:
Let’s begin by first defining what a covenant is. A covenant is defined as “An established lifelong partnership or relationship, creating a framework of trust, rules, and mutual benefits.” Up until this point (Genesis 15), the Bible does not state Abram’s reciprocal response to God’s promises outside of him believing and building an altar. All along, God was making Abram promises. Some would argue God’s covenant with Abram was one sided with God being responsible for the consequences if the covenant was broken. According to Genesis 22, God did swear an oath by his own name since there was no one greater to swear by (Hebrews 6:13). However, as mentioned last week, we have a fiduciary duty to uphold our end of the agreement. What are you going to give God in return for all he has done and will do for you? The author of Psalm 116 (assuming it is David though there’s speculation that the author is unknown) specifically verses 12 through 14 described it in the best way. He said “What shall I render unto the Lord for all his benefits toward me? I will take the cup of salvation and call upon the name of the Lord. I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people.” This scripture reminds me of the hymn “What shall I render? Tell me what shall I give? God has everything and everything belongs to him.” In a contract, there are terms and conditions that are applicable to both/all parties. God will certainly make good on his part, but what about us? He desires love reciprocated, undefiled worship, adoration, obedience, willingness to live a life of holiness, relationship, friendship, trust and faith in him, a repenting spirit if/when we do sin, acknowledgment of him, reverence, honor, respect, truth, and total reliance on him, just to name a few things. We are living sacrifices!

A Covenant is Like a Marriage:
Since Genesis 12, God has been making promises to Abram but now he is establishing a covenant. There are distinctions between a promise and a covenant. It’s like putting a stamp on the promise, going deeper or on another level and sealing it with a bond. It’s like going from dating to marriage. It’s a much more sacred commitment but at the same time not forced. A covenant or contract is legally binding and there are consequences if broken. What will be your motive for God’s promises and blessings? What are your intentions? Are they truly pure before God? I always pray to God that my motives be pure. A Covenant is likened unto a marriage. One could ask the same questions. Why are you getting married? When a man asks for a woman’s hand in marriage, he typically would go to her parents first to ask permission. One of the main questions parents ask is “What are your intentions with my daughter?” However, I dare say, the man and the woman have a responsibility in marriage. What are your reasons for marrying? Is it for money, companionship, sex, pressure from friends and family, age, to keep up with the status quo? Do you know one of the main reasons for marriage was to be fruitful and multiply, having children and raising them in the fear of the Lord? This is why it is so important to be equally yoked with your spouse prior to saying “I do!” Your marriage produces a family! Not only by bearing children, but you become family with your in-laws. In the same sense, God’s covenant with Abram produced a family, an entire nation! When we enter into a covenant with God we ought to bear fruit spiritually. What are you doing with the blessings God gave you? What legacy are you building for your children to inherit (naturally and spiritually)? I know! There are a lot of questions this week to ponder. Let’s move on.

Killing the Flesh:
In verse 10 Abram killed those five animals as what was directed by God and presented them to him. As mentioned last week, the only way to atone for sin was through a blood sacrifice. The sacrificing of those five animals was a representation of one main commonality – sin! Being cleansed from sin, the atonement for sin, the need for consecration, receiving forgiveness of sin, and purification from sin. As mentioned, several weeks ago, we must die to our flesh and not allow it to lead our spirit. The only way to combat sin is through prayer, fasting, studying and meditating on God’s Word, and having the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. That is the foundation. Continuing with verse 10, Abram then cut each animal down the middle except for the birds (turtledove and pigeon). Look at the parallel of these sacrifices and what was done to Jesus! As our High Priest, he atoned for our sins! And again, when Jesus died, this eradicated the need for the sacrificing of animals. Not only that but the veil of the temple was torn in two (Matthew 27:50-51; Mark 15:38; Luke 23:45), providing us direct access to God and Jesus being our mediator! Now we can come boldly to God’s throne of grace and obtain mercy in time of need (Hebrews 4:14-16)!

In conclusion, again, I say, God is preparing us and making us ready to receive everything he promised! He wants us cleansed from the inside out. He wants us to be pure vessels of honor and not unto dishonor. Our relationship with him dictates our character (e.g., being integral, drama free, peaceful, holding true to our convictions, how we treat others, etc.) and our character determines who we are, how far we will go in life, and in our businesses.

Well, family. Here we are with another week filled with Holy Spirit revealing God’s will for our lives through His Word! Each week we go deeper with him! Everything he shows us is aligning with his word and as children of God is especially relevant to what we are experiencing! Last week we discussed how God’s promises are in our DNA. We are not only made in the likeness and image of God, but he breathed into us part of his spirit. The Bible says,” And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7). Ruach, God’s breath, his spirit is how we are alive. We carry God’s DNA within us. Additionally, as children of God, we are the seed of Abraham and joint heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17) and as an heir we not only inherit eternal life, but also blessings while here on this earth.

We also saw how Abram believed what God said about the number of descendants he would have and the land they would inherit. So much so that he was made righteous by believing! Abram’s faith was being stretched. He was growing and his relationship with God was getting stronger. He was able to communicate with God in such a way that the Lord would respond. God took the time to explain in detail and answer Abram’s questions. Remember, God is the ultimate supreme being; The eternal and self-existent one; I AM. He doesn’t have to respond or answer anything we ask. However, he is so merciful, loving and compassionate toward us. He wants our faith to mature, and it all starts with faith the size of a mustard seed (Matthew 17:20; Luke 17:6). Reminds me of a song we would sing at church that goes “Faith, faith, faith. Just a little bit of faith. You don’t need a whole lot. Just use what you got. Faith, faith, faith. Just a little bit of faith.” Keep watering your faith with the Word of God and spending time with him. Just to reiterate once more, believing and waiting on God does not mean you are just sitting still waiting for the blessing to fall on you from the sky. No. It’s quite the contrary. Faith is believing with confidence in him, knowing he will do just what he said and as you wait you prepare. The Bible says, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). Believe God! If he said it, then he will do it! But the disclaimer is you must believe while it appears impossible, not when it looks like everything is coming together! Remember, it is the evidence of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1). Abram believed while he had no children of his own.

It’s typical to want the blessings right away, but prior to receiving, there are some prerequisites and that is what we will see take place with Abram. When God made him a promise, he believed, but also asked how he will know that he will inherit the land (Genesis 15:8). In verse 9, God gave Abram specific instructions as it pertained to sacrifices and offerings. This is where God was preparing to make a covenant with Abram. As we continue, we will see how all of this is applicable to our lives and businesses.

The Sacrificial Offerings to God:
God already promised Abram descendants and land but now he was officially sealing it through establishing a divine covenant. For those who have been following along these past months, I think you know by now that we are going to explore the spiritual connotations behind each of these animals (heifer/cow, she-goat, ram, turtledove, and young pigeon) mentioned in verse 9! Scholars state that these animals were specific for a covenantal ritual and the 3 symbolizes “maturity, completeness, and the perfect age for sacrifice or covenant-making. Also, the number three often indicates divine fullness, while the third year represents the peak of an animal's strength and physical prime.” These offerings, known as the Mosaic offerings, are also mentioned in the book of Leviticus. Though mentioning these Old Testament offerings, the sacrificed shed blood of Jesus Christ, who never sinned and was without spot or wrinkle, superseded them all! Through his death, he was the ultimate sacrifice, no longer requiring the shedding of blood from animal sacrifices once and for all for all eternity! For without the shedding of Christ’s blood, there would be no remission of sin (Hebrews 9:22)!

The Heifer: According to scholars the heifer “represents purity, sacrifice, and cleansing” of sin. As kingdom entrepreneurs, God is requiring us to be cleansed from sin and all unrighteousness and to be holy vessels. The Bible says, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1). How does one be holy? Well, let’s list the works of the flesh mentioned in Galatians 5:19-21 (Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like). God doesn’t want us to commit any of those sins. However, if we do, we have an advocate with our Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ (1 John 2:1). The Bible says that he is “faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). This doesn’t mean that we blatantly continue in sin, however.

The She-Goat: According to the book of Leviticus (4:27-35), a female goat was used for common/lay people’s sin of ignorance, what scholars state, “unintentional sin.” A female goat was the “prescribed sacrifice for an individual who unintentionally sinned and incurred guilt. Offering an unblemished female goat symbolized humility, submission to God, and the acknowledgment of the need for divine forgiveness.” As children of God, we often ask him in our prayers to forgive us for our sins, known and unknown. God is so holy, sometimes we don’t realize or recognize the sins we’ve committed. However, once made known, we must rectify to be in right standing with God.

The Ram: According to scholars, “A ram symbolized consecration and atonement: In the Levitical laws, rams were heavily utilized for burnt offerings and ordination, symbolizing purification, atonement, and the transfer of sin to an innocent substitute.” Jesus was made the propitiation (payment) to atone for our sins. He took our place. We deserved death and hell for eternity. Now we have eternal life through him.

The Turtledove and Young Pigeon: Turtledoves and pigeons were typically used for the poor who could not afford certain animals for sacrificing. God essentially had a sacrificial system for every class. According to scholars, were used for purification purposes. “They symbolize humility, gentleness, and the accessibility of God's covenant to everyone, regardless of status.” This reminds me of King David’s prayer to God in Psalm 51 when he sinned with Bathsheba. He showed humility, acknowledging his sins. Specifically in verses 16-17, he said, “For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” This is what God is requiring of us today.

In conclusion, each of these offerings and sacrifices have a common theme, which is consecration and atonement for sin and all point to Jesus Christ, who was innocent but took on the iniquity of us all. Him who knew no sin became sin for us (2 Corinthians 5:21)! God is ready to establish his covenant with us, which is a step further from his promises. However, we also have a fiduciary duty to uphold our end of the agreement. God wants pure, undefiled worship from us. He desires a love relationship. He’s ready to bless but wants us to be prepared to receive.

Hey, family! While writing this, the song “I Believe” by Micah Stampley kept ringing within my heart. The chorus simply yet powerfully goes like this, “I believe. I believe. Lord, I believe. Lord, I believe…” As mentioned last week, Genesis chapter 15, begins with God appearing to Abram in a vision and a conversation taking place between the two of them. This shows the type of relationship Abram had with the Lord. As my husband always states, “RELATIONSHIP” which goes far beyond any religion. Abram was a man of great faith, but he did wonder when and how God was going to bring what he promised to fruition. At that point in time, Abram had many servants/workers born from his household, but no child of his own. Nonetheless, he never lost his faith in God and believed everything God told him though it had not yet come to pass. Many of us can certainly attest to this for our own lives. Perhaps God spoke to you and made a promise, but it has not come to pass. A few, and for some, several years have gone by since the initial promise. You believe God but as time goes on, you may begin to wonder if the Lord is going to come a different way than you initially thought or what you consider your first preference; your true desire. Like Abram, we start to assume or conjure up in our mind different scenarios of how the Lord will bless. We begin to question if God meant exactly what he said or if we misinterpreted. Trust me. I’ve done it! However, I refuse to let go of my faith in God! I believe! I not only believe for myself, but for my seed, family, and everything attached to me, both directly and indirectly. As we read a little further, you will see how Abram did just that! We will continue exploring the next several weeks, God’s promise reaffirmed, covenant established, and oath declared, and how this blessing is tied to an even greater purpose.

The Promise is in Your DNA:
As we read in verses 2-3, Abram’s reply to God showed what was truly in his heart. He desired an heir despite how blessed he already was. Since some years have gone by from God’s initial promise mentioned back in chapter 12, though Abram believed, he assumed his servant Eliezer would be his heir and receive the inheritance. Scholars state, “Being born from Abram’s household refers to individuals who were born under his roof, served in his estate, and were considered his loyal dependents or adopted heirs rather than biological children. This status indicated deep covenantal inclusion, sharing in both the privileges and spiritual responsibilities of Abraham's family.” However, in verse 4, the Lord corrected Abram and told him specifically that he would have a son from his own bowels; essentially his son and lineage will have his DNA! God took it a step further and showed him the countless number of descendants he would have. This is where God’s promise to Abram was confirmed, removing any confusion he may have had and reaffirmed Abram, assuring he was going to do exactly what he said. How is this applicable to you and your business? Your promise/blessing is part of your DNA! My husband mentioned this to me a few months ago and now I see how what we are experiencing is so befitting. The Lord brought to my attention how entrepreneurship is in my family. So, it's in my DNA. My grandmother sewed lap scarves, made cabbage patch dolls and doll clothing, other clothing and apparel, purses, etc. She also earned a Doctorate in Divinity and Sacred Theology. My Aunt had her own LLC working as an educator for children with special needs. Another aunt is well versed and educated in contracts, established a thriving prayer network, and is a licensed life coach. My cousins established their own tech companies. My sister is not only a school vice principal but prior to that she was a licensed cosmetologist. My niece is an author and one day will have her own publishing company, and the list goes on. Also, my family is full of individuals who obtained secular degrees. However, there is more to us than that! My husband and his side of the family as well are full of entrepreneurs and well educated. His Mom owned a daycare, brother is an accomplished author, sister makes and sells natural products, and so forth. I could go on and on. Not to mention on the spiritual side, both our families are full of preachers, pastors, evangelists, prophets/prophetesses, and teachers of the word and has been in our bloodline for years! Our roots run deep and the Lord has truly blessed us. If you put our families together, we literally have a 5-fold ministry, and the Levites! I am not saying this to be prideful but sharing what the Lord reminded me of and to encourage those who are on their own faith journey. For some, you may be the first in your family to pursue entrepreneurship, earn a degree, or even the first to be saved, changing the trajectory of your blood line. God chose you! Most importantly, God, our Heavenly Father, is in our DNA! As a matter fact, we were made in the likeness and image of him, and he knows us better than we know ourselves, and through Jesus Christ, we are now joint heirs with him, able to inherit eternal life (Romans 8:17). Hallelujah!

Abram Believes God:
Once the Lord explained to Abram his intentions of the promise, he was strengthened, obtained a boost of confidence, and did not doubt nor wonder. The questions he had in his heart were answered and confirmed. Clarity! As you spend more time with God, he will make things clearer. You won’t second guess yourself. Abram simply (and that’s an understatement) believed God and when he believed, he was made righteous in God’s sight. As you’ll see throughout the Old and New Testament, an entire nation (as a matter of fact many nations) stemmed from Abraham’s faith in God, not just naturally but also spiritually. Even Jesus, when he took off his deity, came down to earth from his Heavenly throne, was born through the line of Judah, which is one of the tribes of Israel (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob/Israel). I don’t want you to be misconstrued about Jesus, however. He was still greater than Abraham, being God and man. Holy Spirit implanted him in Mary’s womb. He came on an assignment to fulfill the law and die for the sins of the world and ultimately, the promise and blessings of Abraham could never be fulfilled without Jesus! I just had to put that plug in there! Moving forward, to this day, Abraham is known as the Father of Faith. The Bible says that he “staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform” (Romans 4:20-21). Abram’s faith was unhinged and was growing stronger with each encounter he had with God. He had full confidence in him and knew without a shadow of a doubt that God was going to do just what he said! How about you? Will you believe?

Proof of Possessing the Promise:
God not only promised Abram descendants, but also land. So, essentially God promised Abram more than one thing. Me and my family are waiting on God for a few things as well and I am certain the same can be said about you. In Abram’s case, God’s promise of him possessing the land was something he and his descendants would inherit, amongst other blessings, both naturally and spiritually. The word inherit is defined as “To receive something from a predecessor. The term is most commonly used in three contexts: 1) Property and wealth, 2) Genetics, 3) Situations (e.g., taking over a responsibility, problem, or role from the person who previously held it.” Also, though similar but different, inheritance is defined as “The legal or customary practice of passing down private property, assets, debts, and privileges upon an individual's death. It is governed by state-specific probate laws and executed according to a will or trust, or by default through intestate succession if no valid will exists.” How does this pertain to us? As children of God, we are the seed of Abraham and again, joint heirs with Christ. God is our Heavenly Father and as being a royal heir, we will inherit blessings while here on this earth and will receive an eternal inheritance. For some of you who own businesses, perhaps it may have been passed down. For others, you built your business from the ground up. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, your business should fit into your God given purpose. If you are not aware, look deep within and pray. You will find it. A few questions to ask yourself - Am I truly helping others through (you fill in the blanks)? What are ways I can help others through my business? What kind of legacy am I building? How do I want to be remembered? When it’s all said and done, only what you do for Christ will last. Amen.

Family, we finally finished up with Gensis 14! Whew! God had much to say but he loves us so much that he wants to ensure we gain an understanding and build a solid foundation prior to moving onward toward obtaining our promise. My promise may not be the same as yours and vice versa, but we have a common denominator which is we are waiting with expectation for God to manifest it. We left Genesis 14 with Abram winning the battle, rescuing his nephew, Lot and recovering his possessions, the goods that were taken, women, and people of the land. God divinely led him to an overwhelming, complete victory! Shortly after, Abram was greeted by both good (Melchizedek, representation of Jesus) and evil (Bera, King of Sodom – represents enticement; the lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and the pride of life). Fortunately, Abram was wise and integral. He did not take anything Bera had to offer because he knew where his true help came from. We too must choose Jesus rather than going the way of the world. Though this particular battle was won, what God promised Abram still had not come to pass. You too may have won a few battles in your own life and business, and God blessed you. However, there still may be something significant that you are waiting on God for. As we begin to read and explore Genesis 15, we will see similarities between our experiences and Abram with the promise reaffirmed and a divine covenant made. Also, in the latter chapters of Genesis, we will see a declaration of God’s oath to Abraham (his name will change a few chapters prior to Genesis 22).

When God Speaks, He Always Confirms Through His Word:
In Genesis 15:1, according to scholars, approximately 1 to 3 years had gone by since Abram’s victorious battle. Isn’t it wonderful to know that God continued to speak with Abram? He’s been doing that since commanding Abram to leave his country, kindred and father’s household. As we previously learned, God would speak to Abram, provide him with instructions and solidify his promises in stages. In turn, Abram’s response was consistently immediate belief and worship. The same can be said about us. God knows exactly where we are at all times and there are a number of ways he speaks to us. It’s not always an audible voice. He can speak through visions, dreams, prophecy and other spiritual gifts, preachers, teachers, people, songs, nature, during prayer, but most importantly through his Word. As a matter fact, no matter the mechanism of how he speaks to us, it must align with his Word! There is always a scripture or story in the Bible that is applicable. I wasn’t planning to go this way, but I will say this. We don’t need a psychic. We don’t need tarot cards. We don’t need a medium. We don’t need our besties and crew, talk shows, self-help books from individuals who are not Holy Spirit filled, or hundreds of people in our ear telling us what to do and how to feel. All we need is Jesus, who is The Word that became flesh, lived and dwelt amongst us, then died for our sins. As your relationship develops, and you spend more time in prayer and meditating on the Word, your spirit man will become sensitive to hearing his voice. God will never lead you astray, out of his will, cause you to compromise or commit sin. He will never lead you to harm yourself or other people. He will never lead you to lie, cheat, or take advantage of individuals. He will never cause you to become prideful. He will never tell you to hate anyone. He is a God of peace and reconciliation. He will never cause you to worship other Gods, follow false doctrines, or beliefs. He will never cause you to believe you are something or someone you are not. That’s why it is so important to have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The Bible says, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper” (Psalm 1:1-3). When God speaks there will be a peace and calmness and sometimes conviction, which leads us to true repentance, drawing us closer to him.

Abram’s Desire; The Promise Reaffirmed Through God’s Word:
The Bible says the word of God is “quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). When God spoke to Abram in verse 1, He knew precisely what Abram was thinking and feeling. He could see and hear Abram’s heart even before Abram’s reply in verses 2-3. He said, “Do not be afraid, Abram, for I will protect you, and your reward will be great” (Genesis 15:1 NLT). What or who did Abram need protection from? Why was he afraid? There’s speculation that Abram was fearful of retaliation from defeating the Mesopotamian Kings and their armies. Looking back at Genesis 14:17, those Kings were slaughtered. So, perhaps someone else from their land could potentially. Nonetheless, what we do know is Abram was deeply concerned with God’s initial promise of making him into a great nation (Genesis 12:2). He was deliberating in his heart when God’s promise for him would come to fruition and the mechanism of how he was going to do it. He desired to leave behind an inheritance for his seed even after he’s gone. Who would be his heir? At this point in time, he had no children from his own loins, and particularly a son. Legacy was a deep seeded desire for Abram despite God’s blessings (e.g., Abram was already wealthy, had servants, won the battle, etc.). God had to remind him that ultimately, he himself was Abram’s reward. This is similar to Hannah’s experience who desired children and her husband saying to her isn’t he worth more than ten sons (1 Samuel 1:8). Let’s park here for a minute. Aren’t we the same way? God blesses us. We face battles in our life and win. Yet, it seems like it is not enough. We desire more. Not necessarily additional blessings but what we consider the ultimate blessing, our deepest desire. This blessing/promise is no ordinary blessing. It is something very hefty, very weighty; what our heart yearns for. Perhaps it’s something only God knows and sees because in all actuality, he placed that desire in you and any vision, dream, or purpose he placed in you carries eternal weight and value. For us, it could be marriage, children, ministry, a business, salvation of loved ones, a new job or position, education/degree, home, just to name a few.

God, More Than Enough:
Though we may be aware of our ultimate desire or when God reveals to us, we do not always receive what he promised immediately. Between the initial promise and receiving the promise, God prepares us. I am reminded of the song, “He’s Preparing Me” by Daryl Coley. He prepares our heart and makes us ready to receive. Again, at this point in time, Abram accomplished much and had great faith, but he still was not quite ready for his son, Isaac and neither was his wife. What God was going to do was something they never experienced before; something beyond their wildest dreams! What we’ll see in the latter chapters of Genesis is the significance of Isaac’s conception and birth. God was stretching Abram’s faith and there was even more for him to learn and understand about God. Abram was learning God’s character and love for him. There are higher heights and deeper depths in God and what Paul describes as the true fullness of life (Ephesians 3:18-19)! Yes, a full, abundant life of faith in Christ is having a true relationship with and delighting in him (Psalms 37:4). It’s learning each day how much he loves us though we could never fully comprehend! For he is more than enough! While on your faith journey, take time to know Jesus (That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death – Philippians 3:10). Abram may not have been willing to sacrifice Isaac had he been born earlier. Again, this is also similar to Hannah, and her son, Samuel. If God had allowed Samuel to be born earlier, Hannah may not have been willing to send him to the Temple to serve at such a young age. Both sons were tied to an even greater purpose, far beyond what Abram and Hannah could see!

God is truly amazing and he continues to speak through His Word. As my husband often says, “Are you listening?” Last week we got into the crux of Abram’s strategies against the enemy and the God-given authority imputed to him. God used him to lead and win one of the first recorded battles in the Bible. Abram did this even before the promise (Isaac and his lineage). In concert, we learned that as children of God, we are going to fight some battles while waiting on our promise. Even after we've won, there's unchartered territory to conquer and we'll still need to believe for even greater. We’re going to experience some ups and downs, but we have authority over the enemy! With the Lord's help, we can conquer anything! As a matter of fact, the word says, “We are more than conquerors through him that loved us” (Romans 8:37) and “Greater is he that is in you than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Jesus is more than the world against us! This is a great segway because as we move forward with the remainder of Genesis chapter 14, you will see Him! That’s right! Jesus always was, long before the New Testament (John 1:1-3)! However, let me not get ahead of myself. As we learned last week, there are four key steps for battling the enemy which are 1) Develop a strategy, 2) Pursue the enemy, 3) Smite the enemy, and 4) Recover all. We will further explore what occurred AFTER the battle and consider how these lessons are applicable to our lives and businesses.

Abram’s Retrieval:
Stemming from Genesis 14:16, when Abram won the battle, he recovered more than just his nephew, Lot and his possessions but also the goods that were taken, women, and people of the land. As we reflected last week, Lot represented our minds being held captive, our familiarity, our comforts, our former way of thinking and doing. When life becomes difficult, we may become discouraged and begin to back up and retreat. Doubt creeps in and we start reminiscing about what we used to do and have. For those in business, that can look like wanting to shut everything down and return to the security of a 9-to-5 job. However, as we’ve already learned, we do not have to surrender to the enemy’s lies and schemes. Abram represents who we are and our faith in Christ. The representation of Lot is as we turn our focus back to God, we begin to recognize the enemy’s strategies and devices against us. We begin to remember who we are, and the authority God has given us. We got our minds right, having joy and peace! We regain our strength, stamina, confidence and faith in God. Everything that we possess is recovered and re-established. Somebody say, “Restoration!” Reminds me of a song by the Winans that says, “Restoration has finally come. I’ve been restored back to my place in God!” So, take your RIGHTFUL place! Reposition yourself! As for your business, you have every right to be where God placed you! Do not allow people, circumstances, or things to deter you! Keep it moving in spite of it all! Regarding the goods that were taken, women, and others held captive, this includes those attached to you both directly and indirectly. Your restoration does not affect just you, but it impacts those around you, including those whom you will encounter or cross paths with. It can be your family, neighbors, community, employees in your company, business partners, even future potential customers and entrepreneurs. As you get yourself together with the help of the Lord, as he prepares you for greater, you will make a major impact! That’s why the devil’s been fighting you so hard! He is not all-knowing and does not know everything God has in store for you, but he can sense that there is something significant ahead and his kingdom will be negatively affected. This leads me to my next point.

Abram’s Reputation/Recognition:
Abram developed quite a reputation with the enemies and people of the land, both prior to and after the battle. Upon Abram’s return from battle, his reputation preceded him. In vs.17, the first person to greet Abram was Bera, King of Sodom. Remember, as we’ve learned a few weeks ago, Bera’s name means evil son, son of evil, son of wickedness, symbolizing “worldly temptation, materialism, and the corruption of sin.” So, you know off the bat, Bera’s intentions were evil. Skipping down to vs. 21, Bera tells Abram to return his people, but can keep the recovered goods for himself. Abram’s response (vs. 22-24) was wise, authoritative, bold, and direct. He did not sugarcoat anything and was unhesitant with rejecting Bera’s proposal. He said I won’t even take a shoe latchet from you! Abram knew issues would stem from this if he did. He knew where his true help came from, the Lord! As a matter fact, Abram was already wealthy. He didn’t want for anything. Abram was upright, consecrated, and unwilling to compromise any of God’s standards! The same can be said about us. In this season, be careful who you allow to fund your business. Be mindful of who you have dealings with, enter into business, agreements, and contracts with. That way he/she or entity, company, or organization can’t tell you how to run, nor control your business! This does not mean to outright disobey the law. What I am saying is do not compromise God’s standards for anyone or anything! What gets presented to you may be enticing (e.g., money, power, recognition) but hold true to your convictions. Don’t deal with companies or individuals who portray unscrupulous behavior. Stand on the word of God! Guard your heart. Remain honorable. Be sober. Be vigilant (1 Peter 5:8). Only God should get the glory, not man. No one will be able to take credit for what God’s about to do in your life!

Recognition of Jesus (Yeshua the Christ), the Anointed and Holy One:
In contrast with Bera, moving back to verse 20, Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High, also approached Abram. Who was this mysterious, intriguing, Melchizedek? There is no mentioning of Melchizedek’s birth, family, or death. As you notice in verse 13, he was not originally mentioned as one of Abram’s allies (Mamre and his relatives, Eshcol and Aner). Where did he come from? Even Abram’s response to Bera in verse 24 did not mention Melchizedek. Melchizedek was a representation of Jesus. He was as scholars state, both “a theophany (a type of Christ) and Christophany (pre-incarnate of Christ).” Jesus is both King and Priest. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords and of his kingdom there will be no end. He is also our High Priest and Sacrificial Lamb who was slain on our behalf. Through his death, the sacrificing of animals is no longer a requirement. One of the most significant duties as a High Priest was performed on the Day of Atonement. In the Old Testament, the Day of Atonement, as scholars state, was “A day dedicated to fasting, rest, and making elaborate sacrifices to cleanse the people and the Tabernacle from their sins. It was the only day of the year the High Priest was permitted to enter the Holy of Holies (the inner sanctuary where God’s presence dwelt above the Ark of the Covenant. The priest would sacrifice a bull for his own sins and those of the priesthood.”). Through the shedding of Jesus Christ’s blood, we have a right to eternal life and there is so much more Jesus did through his death. Today, we are tabernacles, housing the presence of God within us. Additionally, scholars state Melchizedek’s name means “King of Righteousness or Justice, King of Salmen, which is often understood as the ancient name for Jerusalem, and King of Shalom (Peace)”. This reminds me of the scripture about Jesus that says, “And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6). Now that we know who Melchizedek represents, let’s take a look at what he did and said to Abram. In verse 18, Melchizedek gave Abram bread and wine. The bread represents Christ’s body which was broken for us and the wine (unfermented), his shed blood. He then proceeds to bless Abram, stating he was blessed by God and in turn, also blessed God stating it was he who defeated his enemies for him. This is proof that Abram did not win the battle in his own power, but it was God! Abram also acknowledged the authority and greatness of Melchizedek by giving him a tenth of the recovered spoil. This is essentially the first mention of paying tithes. There’s not enough space for me to expound, but I truly believe in the power of paying tithes and offering to God. I am a witness of the benefits. How does all this relate to you and your business? There is no way that you can effectively run a successful business without Jesus! Some people’s idea of success includes money, fortune, and fame but in all actuality, as I previously mentioned several weeks prior, true success is your soul prospering (3 John 1:2).

In conclusion, your victory is going to be heard throughout the land! You will be recognized and/or will receive some recognition. As you become successful and your business develops, you are going to get approached by good and evil. You must make the decision to do what is right! Choose Jesus vs. the world! Enjoy your journey with Jesus. It's a wonderful thing to be able to put our trust in God and not man. Not in finances, not in jobs, not even in ourselves! It's all about Jesus and what he'll have us to do with total reliance on him! Ultimately, he gets the glory anyhow! Amen.
