I’ve finished watching Dark and reading MPD Psycho (Multi-Personality Detective Psycho)!
※Spoiler warning
First, a quick impression of Dark: To start with, it was really interesting. Honestly, there were some developments I could predict, but even the predictable parts were written in such a way that they still felt enjoyable and engaging — the script was truly excellent. I think this is one of those series with an exceptionally unique and complicated relationship chart lol.
That said, compared to what I expected, there weren’t as many deeply moving moments or true “peak” scenes that stuck with me emotionally. (The parts I personally loved were Jonas’s conclusion and the reunion scene between Ulrich and Mikkel.)
Next, my thoughts on Multi-Personality Detective Psycho: To be honest, the story lacks consistency overall, and it drifts quite far from the impression you get from the title (especially in the second half). But the character work is really strong. Of course the protagonists Amamiya Kazuhiko and Nishizono Tetora, but also side characters like Sasayama, Kitou, and others — they’re all very appealing.
From the middle onward it starts feeling like a constant climax, and there were times I thought “how are they going to fill another dozen+ volumes with this?” There are some drags here and there, but personally I feel it wrapped up in a pretty satisfying way.
By the way, I’m currently 10 episodes into Season 1 of Six Feet Under. In complete contrast to Dark, this show manages to make me feel emotional with almost every single episode. I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens to this family from here on out!
I’ve just finally finished reading The Count of Monte Cristo! The conclusion that Edmond Dantès arrives at is truly magnificent, and the dynamics between him and Mercédès (especially the conversation before the duel with Albert and their final exchange) had me in tears. It’s not just tremendously entertaining as a popular novel—it’s also outstanding in terms of its writing. “Wait and hope!” is a phrase that perfectly encapsulates the work, and it’s such a powerful theme. I’m planning to dive into many more works this year. Below is a list of some of the ones I’d like to get to this year: Movies: • Loving Vincent • It's Such a Beautiful Day • Doctor Zhivago • The Lighthouse • Cure • The Human Condition • Tokyo Story • The Castle of Sand (Suna no Utsuwa) • The Elephant Man • Aftersun • Citizen Kane • Sonatine • Poor Things • Beau Is Afraid • The Blood of Wolves (Korō no Chi) • What’s Eating Gilbert Grape • Nomadland • Drive My Car TV Shows: • Dark (currently on Season 2, Episode 5) • Six Feet Under • Doctor Who • House M.D. • Game of Thrones • The Leftovers • Sons of Anarchy • Bates Motel • Black Sails Manga & Comics: • MPD Psycho (currently at volume 13) • The Girl from the Other Side • My Broken Mariko • Karakuri Circus • Inoue’s Full Moon arc • Superman: Lost • Far Sector • Something is Killing the Children • The Many Deaths of Laila Starr • The Department of Truth • Upgrade Soul • Megahex Visual Novels: • The House in Fata Morgana • Full Metal Daemon Muramasa (Sōkō Akki Muramasa) Novels: • 1984 • The Brothers Karamazov • God Emperor of Dune • Fathers and Sons • Steppenwolf • The Three-Body Problem • Faust • The Divine Comedy • Hamlet • The Metamorphosis • Snow Country • Dogra Magra • The Master and Margarita Web Novels: • Lord of the Mysteries • Reverend Insanity (rereading from the beginning) • Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint There are plenty more works I haven’t listed here, so I’ll do my best to get through as many as possible!
Sorry I’ve been so busy lately and haven’t been able to stay active—my apologies! The busy period is going to continue for a bit longer, so please look forward to new videos and such in the meantime…
Recently Watched Works
• The Legend of Hei 1 & 2 (羅小黒戦記) I started with 1 just to prepare for 2, but man, 1 was seriously amazing. And then when I watched 2…I never expected to encounter such a masterpiece. Xiaohei (Shaohei) is just too cute! The action is all about breathtaking fluid movement and it’s absolutely stunning, and the story is simple yet really engaging and satisfying. I hope we get more Chinese anime like this!
I haven’t read the manga, so this is purely from the movie, but it was wonderful. The character development, philosophy, and psychological portrayal are all incredibly polished and interesting. Personally, I really like Kaido lol.
• IT: Welcome to Derry I didn’t have high expectations, but wow, it was actually really fun! Especially all the Pennywise appearance scenes—they’re hilarious and really remind you how strong the character is. That said, if you only know the IT movies and nothing else, you might get left behind because it’s packed with elements straight from Stephen King’s original works. So, if you haven’t seen/read more of the source material, just keep that in mind!
• Stranger Things: Season 5 Public opinion seems pretty divided, but personally I think they did a solid job wrapping it up. Sure, the ending was predictable and there are plenty of things to nitpick, but considering the era’s context and Vecna’s strategy, that coming-out scene near the end didn’t strike me as all that weird or out of place.
• Scarlet (果てしなきスカーレット) Well…um…yeah. But honestly, it wasn’t as terrible as everyone says. There are way worse works out there, and it’s definitely not something I’d give 1 star on review sites. I personally liked the gritty action scenes, and some of the cuts were genuinely beautiful. That said, overall it felt sloppy, and I didn’t feel any charm from the characters other than Scarlet herself, which was a shame.
I’d love to write more in detail, but that’s the gist for now. I’m also behind on replying to comments, but I’ll get to them when I have some breathing room!
Finally, I finished reading Houseki no Kuni! I’d been meaning to read it for a long time but somehow never got around to starting it. The other day, I took the plunge and bought all the volumes at once, and ended up binge-reading the entire series.
To get straight to the point—it was extremely good. As people say, Phosphophyllite’s character development and the conclusion are truly wonderful, the world-building is masterful, and I finished all the volumes in just a few days.
From a writing perspective, the way Buddhist symbolism and themes are woven in is remarkably skillful.
Lately, I’ve been trying to watch more films from outside America and Japan, so I recently viewed Andrei Tarkovsky’s Nostalghia, Wim Wenders’s Faraway, So Close!, and Federico Fellini’s 8½.
Both the Fellini and Tarkovsky films are over two hours long and packed with complex, philosophical content, but I was completely captivated by the beauty and artistry of each individual shot, and before I knew it, I had watched them all the way through. They were incredibly enjoyable! With Nostalghia, there are still many elements and symbols I don’t fully understand, but the conclusion moved me deeply.
As for Faraway, So Close!, I personally preferred the previous film (Wings of Desire), but the more entertainment-oriented direction compared to the original, along with the character dynamics that felt especially poignant because I’d seen the first one, were a lot of fun. The devil character who makes his first appearance in this film was great too!
I just finished watching Barry! What an amazing series. Personally, I loved the vibe of Season 1 the most, but as the seasons went on, the relationships between the characters and their inner emotions became so much more complicated — as a human drama, it just kept getting deeper and more profound with each season!
