Sometimes I feel like 'research' for video essays on media is more like 'how can I align my opinion with the most people?' or 'How can I disagree and stand out?'
Don't get me wrong, research is important, but when your 'research' is less to do about facts and more about other people's opinions, that's not really research. That's just biasing your personal perspective towards what a group of people are saying. Engage with media, not the audience. Come to your own conclusions, have your own thoughts. Ponder things, and question the topic. Write the essay to teach yourself and reinforce your current knowledge. Don't write the essay and think it's a more profound thought because everyone agrees with you, or you've said what everyone else is saying.
Sometimes you're gonna have a different view on things. That's not contrarian either. A contrarian looks at popular opinion and goes against it. Sometimes you're gonna go against the grain, sometimes you're gonna align perfectly with popular opinion. Other times you're gonna have a unique position no one's ever seen before. Make sure you allow yourself to have all of those things. Opinions can be beautiful and appreciated in all their forms (even the ones that piss me off). You're never gonna say something new unless you learn to engage with media in an honest and thoughtful way isolated from what others think of it. Don't be afraid to have your opinion. You could end up saying the dumbest shit ever, or the most profound and nuanced thing ever. And just because you say one or the other in a certain instance that doesn't mean it'll be that way the next time. However, it will always mean that your opinion and thoughts are genuine and that they belong to you and you alone.
I've got a couple ideas to host an art/writing competition. However, I am a complete novice at organizing such things. My thought is to create a google form for people to fill out and link their stuff with. And then the other thing I wanna do is take that competition and turn it into a mini-award show type thing. Also thinking of having a cash prize for the top 3.
Thing is, when money is involved there's a lot that can go wrong or be done wrong, so I wanna make sure I cover all my bases and run it right if I do run it.
I would really love it if one of the meal prep companies would sponsor me and give me free food. Fuck the money, just cover my groceries for the next month or two and we're good.
