Welcome to Architecture for Thought
We explore emergent technologies and philosophies that drive the discipline of architecture toward a more efficient, honest and earth-friendly practice. We focus on Digital Fabrication, Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Reality, and Material Ecology in relation to Design, 3D Printing and Architectural Theory. Our research aims to encourage new methods of practice by challenging current standards and typologies within design, architecture, and construction industries.
Architecture for Thought is hosted by Stephen Coorlas, a licensed architect and owner of Coorlas Architecture PLLC, a boutique Design & Architecture studio in Chicago, IL. Stephen attended the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) in Spain and was trained in advanced design and digital fabrication technologies. This training was essential to his prior professional career as Design Director of several international architecture firms.

Here's a keyframe transition using Luma AI Dream Machine. No, it's not perfect - But for a quick spatial-study tool it allows you to explore and assess perceived geometry or materials from 2D images.
For this study, 2 images were produced in Midjourney with a common reference image, which enabled consistent colors, textures, and geometries. Luma's Dream Machine also has an "extend" animation tool to create video beyond the 2 keyframes, but with no third reference image the results are subject to complete randomness.
This is a continuation on the discussion of design including 4D tools such as animation for assessing space and functionality. With animation tools becoming more accessible and easier to integrate into the design process, we can evaluate the practicality of architecture from a constructability, functionality, and phenomenological point of view simultaneously, either through animation or VR walkthroughs.

Hey everyone! I started a mentorship program called LEAP (League of Emergent Architectural Practitioners). The program is beginning with open-invite YouTube Live sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings @ 9PM CST. Each session will be 60 minutes in length, and will cover a variety of topics including architectural common practice, emergent technology, and experimental industry workflows.
I'm curious to know if this is something you'll find useful, and if so, what topics would you like discuss or explore? Let me know in the comments below, and hope to see you there!

AI synthetic video brings a new dimension to the design process - Time.
In the past I have explored integrating the dimension of time into my design work, but I never anticipated the idea of "design" becoming a generative process involving a plethora of animated concept images. And now, with a few words, and the click of a button, a 4D design process is upon us.
It's gluttonous. It's ungoverned. And there's no good precedent for facilitating these emergent processes in academia or in practice. Everyone is scrambling, attempting to give purpose to these new tools. In times like these, it's important to assess our trajectory, to ensure we're heading in a positive direction.
We're in the midst of some radical shifts in architectural design and documentation workflows. It should fascinate you to realize that in your lifetime, you will experience a similar shift in the industry that previous generations experienced with the transition from physical to digital workflows.

Hey everyone - In some upcoming videos I'll be focusing on an emergent approach for designing and documenting componentized architectural systems. This research will experiment with AI and machine learning applications to assist in segmenting architectural/structural models for large scale 3D printing.
If you've been following this channel, you've probably heard me discuss this growing typology of making architecture. This year, I'd like to make significant progress on this approach, and encourage anyone who is interested in rewriting the standard for designing, documenting, fabricating and assembling architecture to chime in to help shape this new branch of practicing architecture, which is inevitably on the horizon.

Proud to see my design come to life. AI images are fun, but understanding how to design and construct complex building geometry is even more rewarding.
Techniques for assembling curvilinear forms are evolving based on new technologies and building systems, but as architects we must secure our place in guiding those changes to facilitate the fabrication of our visions.
That's a wordy way of saying we need to stay at the forefront of evolving architectural design and construction technologies.

It's a strange workflow - Combining descriptive words together to create architectural imagery.
For designers, this new process emphasizes one's understanding and experience associating words with images; but even more interesting is imagining how we'll teach younger generations to learn these associations.
Words evoke emotion, and by combining words we describe experiences. Perhaps phenomenology is more applicable in a world where design is prompted by reverse engineering experiences and emotions into plug-and-play word groupings...
