The Calabash of Kindness – An African Story
Long ago, in a quiet village nestled between rolling hills and whispering trees, there lived a poor old woman named Mama Nia. She had no riches, no family, and no cattle. Yet, she possessed one treasure: a heart overflowing with kindness.
Every morning, Mama Nia would sweep the village square, fetch water for the elders, and share whatever little food she had with hungry children. “Kindness,” she would say, “is the seed that grows even in the driest land.”
One day, as the sun burned hot upon the earth, a weary traveler stumbled into the village. His clothes were torn, his feet blistered, and his eyes held the dust of many roads. While others turned away, Mama Nia welcomed him with a smile, washed his feet, and gave him her last bowl of maize porridge.
That night, as the stars blinked over the village, the traveler revealed himself: he was a spirit sent from the ancestors, disguised to test the hearts of men.
“You, Mama Nia, have passed the test,” the spirit said. He handed her a simple calabash, painted with ancient symbols. “This is the Calabash of Kindness. Each time you give, it shall never run dry.”
From that day on, Mama Nia’s home became a place of abundance. The calabash overflowed with food, healing herbs, and warmth for all who came. No one in the village went hungry again. And slowly, those who once turned away learned the value of kindness.
They say the calabash still exists, hidden deep in the roots of African soil, whispering to those who remember:
“Kindness is the true wealth of a people.”
