When examining the "Tevârikh-i Âl-i Osmânlar" written during the Ottoman period, it is clearly seen that the Ottoman sultans were aware of their origins in Central Asia and their Turkish identity. In these books, the Ottoman dynasty is traced back to Oghuz Khan. In history books where the Ottomans are shown as descendants of Oghuz and the Kayı tribe, Ottoman history is treated as a part of Turkish history. The Ottoman dynasty emphasized its Turkish identity by tracing its lineage not to the Caliphs or Genghis Khan, as many states before and contemporaries did, but to Oghuz Khan. The Ottoman sultans, who were also Caliphs, did not hesitate to have their Turkish identity written in history books.
