K, so does anyone have Bee allergies? With the blossoming of Spring here comes the bees! I found one in my car already the other day!!! So my son is pretty allergic, not severe but he has a really nasty reaction - like huge swelling wherever he gets stung that won't go down for days even with steroids, it gets pretty scary! With that being said I have an action plan for him & this may not work if you have severe reactions as well - but here's a little wild weed who can help that is EVERYWHERE... Plantago major! It's found along roadsides, fields, lawns, etc. & you've might've heard it called by other names such as; way bread, snake plant, doorweed, plantain, etc. If you're out say just walking or hiking or at even at a picnic this summer, and don't have bite spray with you - you can pluck this weed, chew it (totally serious, if that's too gross crush it up in your hands to release the juice or use water to crush it up if you have some on you) & apply it to a bug bite/sting. In early spring it doesn't have the central spike yet, but can be picked eaten raw when first blooming & used as a pot herb once it's grown for a bit (think later summer). They're full of antioxidants, high in calcium & vitamins A, C & K (just don't pick them from an area that is sprayed with chemicals). Still don't believe how this little weed can help? Here's info about it from the NIH;
Correspondingly, studies have found that Plantago major is effective as a wound healer, as well as an antiulcerative, antidiabetic, antidiarrhoeal, anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antibacterial, and antiviral agent. It also combats fatigue and cancer, is an antioxidant and a free radical scavenger. #bees #spring #herbaltips #herbalhealing #plantago

Spring & Snapping turtles?!!! Yep : ). Lol, went for a beautiful spring evening stroll last night at a nearby nature preserve and just as we were about to cross a creek on this "stepping' stone - we realized that it was actually a very large snapping turtle!!!! Pretty cool though (at a safe distance of course ; )... I love how nature's little creatures are starting to emerge from their looong winters nap : ). #nature #naturepreserve #turtles #snappingturtle #springtime #burchfield

Does anyone have Spring fever?!! I don't know how your hands are holding up after winter, but I'm going to share how to make a 3 ingredient hand salve to get your hands garden ready post a dry winter ; ). You'll only need; avocado oil, beeswax & any essential oil(s) you love. Avocado & oil olive oil are great for the skin; they moisturize and condition skin, but also help repair it too. Beeswax is antibacterial (check out my video on how to make beeswax food wraps, they will seriously keep your lettuce/greens fresh for at least a week or two!) and sweet orange (or you can use eucalyptus, lemongrass, etc.) can help skin look smoother and more radiant - plus it smells great ; ). I use old tins that can't be recycled like the altoids tin in the pic, lol. Check out my shorts to see how you can make it - just make sure to use it at night before bed or right after the shower, it's a bit greasy but it does absorb pretty quick! Also, orange can lighten the skin so use it after you've been in the sun and not before.... #handsalve #repurpose #recycle #beeswax #essentialoil

Thinkin' about earth day yet & don't what to do with glass jars that can't be recycled? Our village doesn't recycle anything beyond the number 3, anything else goes God knows where, most likely a dump : (. Always check the numbers on the bottom of your jars and w/your locale to see what they accept. What I like to do is soak & clean the jars that can't be recycled then use them to store bulky items like my mushrooms ; ), loose tea, marshmallows, etc. - they're really good for organizing your pantry & cabinets too w/o having to invest in more plastic containers (although I do have those too). Check out my shorts to watch the video for other ideas on what to do with these jars ; ). #upcycle #earthday #repurpose #organizingtips

Did you ever hear of lambs ear? I first heard of it from my grandma..... Lambs ear grows & looks like a weed, it's super soft & has tiny rosettes that form in the center. It's literally everywhere! We came across tons of it on a trail walk yesterday evening. But you really don't have to go into the woods to find it. I was just walking out of my doctors office & found it growing along the building! It looks a lot like Mullein - Mullein grows on a stalk like structure very tall w/yellow foxglove-like rosettes, where lambs ear grows smaller & low to the ground, but the two are different w/similar medicinal uses. What can you do w/lambs ear?!!! It has antibacterial, antimicrobial & antiseptic properties & was used long ago as a natural band aid or antibiotic poultice.. You can use it on cuts, stings, bites if you're hiking - I can almost guarantee this stuff will be nearby! You can squash the leaves with a bit of water and apply to the area you were stung. You can also collect, clean & dry the leaves to make a tea for colds & throat infections. FYI, it's also edible!!! It can be used in salads, stir fried or steamed... Just thought I'd share something green & herbal for St. Paddy's Day weekend ; ) & if you end up needing a detox at the end of it, check out how to make a nettle detox tea by checking out my shorts : ). Have fun & stay safe this weekend! #lambsear #herbalbandaid ##herbalfirstaid #herbalremedies

Happy Thursday! Just thought I'd share my other favorite spring flower, the crocus - found this beauty poking out of the weed fabric in my front garden. When I pulled into my driveway it was the first thing I saw. For some reason the story of Persephone jumped in my head. In greek mythology Persephone was abducted into the underworld by Hades. Long story short, when she was finally found by her mother Demeter (who was aided by Hekate, my favorite goddess of all ; ), a deal had been made for her to spend six months in Hades realm with him & six months above back on the terrestrial ground - starting with the season of spring. When Persephone returns, her mother Demeter makes the earth bloom and grow bountiful after her absence. When she returns (in the fall) to the underworld her goddess mother expresses her sorrow in the barrenness of autumn and winter. Persephone's home : ). #persephonerises #spring #greekmythology #persephone #crocus

Happy March!!! Whoop, whoop, there's a 'lil magic in the last photo - if you look carefully you'll see it ; ). It's the perfect Easter egg for March too... Another thing I love about March is finding these beautiful, delicate snowdrops in bloom. Snowdrops bloom from Jan.-March, but I usually find them late Feb./March. They always make me smile as a reminder that the 1st breaths of spring are on their way : ), have a lovely weekend! #rainbows #March #snowdropflowers

Welp, the good ole covid got me.... 😷and naturally it had to be the week I took off of work😡. To be honest, I feel as if I have a run of the mill virus (cold, achy & tired, congested) now that I've just put it like that it sounds pretty awful, lol. I'm taking my own advice & trying to get as much vitamin C, herbal tea (with turkey tail) and immune boosting foods into my system as I can. What is Turkey tail? It sounds funny right?! These pictures are from when we foraged this past fall - Turkey tail mushroom literally looks like little turkey tails🦃. Here's a few facts about this cute little powerhouse mushroom; 1. Fortifies your immune system 2. Maintains healthy gut bacteria 3.Can support the treatment of some cancers After bringing them home, rinsing & dehydrating them, they can be ground up using a ninja and made into a tincture using a dual extraction method. To learn how to make a dual extracted tincture you can click on "Reishi the Mushroom of Immortality" under my video section. Usually using a grain alcohol, you would use the same method. #turkeytailmushroom #turkeytail #medicinalmushrooms #guthealth #mushroomsforhealth

Ever wonder if the universe is sending you messages? I am a very pragmatic person, yet…. I’m a lil’ woo woo too🤣. I know, it’s a contradiction. I’ve been trying to set up a schedule w/posts & was recently wondering if I should focus more on health & healthy food for busy families (or for people w/o)or about repairs/decor. As I was musing and simultaneously cooking dinner for the ravenous beasties 🥰😂, I kid you not, the olive oil I had just poured in my grandmas cast iron skillet formed a heart. I couldn’t have made the shape if I tried. I heard you Jo🥰😇, guess you can figure out what my next post will be about😉. #castironskillet #castironcooking #hearts #messagesfromgrandma #healthyrecipes #February
