Bikepacking Adventures

Hi my name is Richard Lake and apparently I am ultra cyclist. I spend most of social life riding bicycles, going wildcamping and enjoying as many type 2 bikepacking adventures as I can possibly fit in a calendar month!

Whether it's a road bike, gravel bike of mountain bike - as long as it's got two wheels - I am there!

My neck of the woods is Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and the Peak District, but thanks to #vanlife I'll often go further afield whether it's seeking out the North and South Downs, Wales, Northumberland or the Yorkshire Dales. I must go visit Scotland again soon!

I also ride countless audax events throughout the year and have ridden many audaxes across the country.

If you would like to show your support for the channel you can find me on BuyMeACoffee: ( buymeacoffee.com/mraudax ) - thank you!

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ON A BIKEPACKING ADVENTURE? Le me know down in the comments below!

A few months ago I travelled over to Spain to tackle on the daddy of gravel bikepacking races that is Badlands.

A couple of weeks later after finishing the race I brought you the Badlands series; my experience of riding in the wildest gravel race in Europe and what an adventure it truly turned out to be.

Now, its December and at the beginning of the month I decided to revisit the series and bring you an hour long look back at the Badlands bikepacking journey.

This is more than just me selecting the best bits from the adventure, I went through and recoloured the footage from my GoPro camera. I have a pretty old edition of the GoPro and was never happy with the original series. So in this hour long edition and went back through all the clips and boosted the contrast; making them a little more lively and less 'flat'.

I also went through the audio, tweaking some sections of the dialog and replacing some of the music choices from the original series. I also added some additional voiceovers into the videos because there was definitely more tell that never made into the video the first time around.

I hope you enjoy this special 'Director's Cut' of Badlands 2025 - The Wildest Gravel Challenge in Europe.

Bikepacking Adventures

Highlights from last weekend.

Bikepacking the North and South Downs. It ended up being a wet weekend, not super cold or anything, just a bit miserable at times. My tyre choice left a lot to be desired, time to bring back the Winter tyres I think!

Still... despite this all, I had a fantastic time bikepacking and wild camping along the Downs.

Day two was a bit different to I had planned, I had hoped to have reached Alfriston at the 'end' of my South Downs route, but stopped short by a couple of hours.

It was slow going on my choice of tyres for the weekend, given I had hours upon hours stuck inside my tent overnight I made new route for the day ahead on @ridewithgps

All in all an eventful weekend.

Much of the route was inspired by the Great British Escapades which I have signed up for next year. The plan after leaving Alfriston was to continue the GBE route along the Cuckoo Trail and then peel off North to join the Forest Way which eventually hook back on to the GBE route at Box Hill before heading back on to the North Downs.

In the end I did something similar, but kept to the road for much of the way back to my van in Guildford.

Roll on next May!

Another race in the calendar for next year, back in Spain once again. This time I've signed up for the Traka Adventure. A 560km off-road gravel adventure starting in Girona Spain. Training starts now (did it ever stop?).

Bikepacking with ‪@crazypedaller‬ this weekend; his first time wild camping made sure he got a “roof” over his head.

LAST REMINDER!

SAVE THE DATE! Gravel Ride THIS SUNDAY October 19th - 9am start from Waltham Bowling Club (DN37 0YJ).

A touch over 50 miles, 2/3 road, 1/3 off-road. Most of the off-road is on gravel or hardpack with a few sections of what I call 'fieldside' which at the moment is probably relatively hardpack; given it's been so dry.

There will be a cafe stop during the ride; the Wolds Edge cafe, plenty of secure bike parking outside.

Talking of parking, anyone arriving out of town, there is a dedicated car parking at the start, if travelling from A180, toilets en route at Spar Laceby Lodge Services (you will need to do a u-Turn on roundabout) or just turn left at the roundabout if travelling from Caistor/A46.

Riding off-road is inherently slower than on the road, I would estimate that we are done by 3pm or 3.30pm so a front light will not be required unless there's dense fog about.

Yes, mountain bikes are welcome! It's not a race, it's a social ride, no drop.

I think thats just about all I need to tell you; ps this is not an official event you are responsible for your actions blah blah.

See you on the 19th!

Big thank you to everyone who is newly subscribed to the channel - that's a lot of you!

AND big thanks to everyone who watched EPISODE 1 of my BADLANDS adventure - 10,000 views in 1 WEEK is amazing!

I am just one guy, riding the rides, editing the videos, finding the music, adding the graphics, creating the thumbnails, coming up with titles that I want people to click without sounding too click-baity!

I enjoy the passion of sharing my bikepacking adventures with you all and I truly hope it inspires some of you to seek adventure for your very selfs.

THANK YOU!

Bikepacking Adventures

So next weekend, if the weather improves it looks like I'll be heading down South to Dunstable to take on Cycling UK's latest bikepacking route - The Royal Chilterns Way.

I'll be heading out on the adventure about 3.30pm from Dunstable, if anyone wants to join me heading out feel free to comment below. And of course if anyone sees me out and about do of course stop me and say hello.

The hope and the plan is to squeeze the adventure into the weekend so there will likely be some riding in the late Autumn evenings; but hopefully not As always the routes are very much an unknown!
