🧠 Why Executive Functions Matter in Occupational Therapy

A child may have the motor skills to complete a task, yet still struggle to do it independently.

Executive functions help children manage everyday activities from attention and working memory to planning, sequencing, problem-solving, flexibility, emotional regulation, and task completion.

These skills can affect:

👕 Dressing and self-care
✏️ Handwriting and classroom tasks
📋 Following multi-step instructions
🧩 Play and social participation
🔄 Managing changes in routine
🧠 Solving problems when things don’t go as planned
🌱 Completing daily activities more independently

Executive-function difficulties are often seen in children with Autism, but they can look very different from one child to another. One child may struggle with attention or task initiation, while another may have difficulty with transitions, planning, or emotional regulation.

That’s why therapy should begin with understanding the individual child not simply the diagnosis.

In Occupational Therapy, the focus is on how these difficulties affect the child’s real-life functioning at home, school, and during play.

The goal is not just to teach a skill in therapy. It is to help the child use that skill in everyday life with greater confidence and independence. 💙
