The Tiger of Mysore

It's Possible that the story of Onake Obavva might actually be true, given my recent research regarding the army's placement under Hyder Ali during the siege of Chitradurga.

A comprehensive video will follow shortly. 🌟πŸŽ₯πŸ‘πŸ’‘πŸ”₯πŸ“š

The Tiger of Mysore

As I continue working on my book on the forts of Hazrat Tipu Sultan, my routine has slowly become part of these old structures. Many times I find myself sitting quietly near the ruined gateways, notebook in hand, trying to understand how things actually worked centuries ago. One of the most fascinating elements I have closely studied is the pulley-based drawbridge system used in the Sultan’s forts. Standing near the entrance, I observed the cut marks in stone, the slots for wooden beams, and the heavy iron fittings that still remain embedded in the walls. These are not decorative remains; they clearly tell a story of movement, tension, and urgency.

The drawbridge was operated through a simple but highly effective pulley mechanism, using thick ropes or iron chains guided through stone channels and wooden rollers. With this system, the bridge could be lifted quickly during an attack, sealing the fort within moments, and lowered again when it was safe. What makes this more realistic and impressive is that it did not depend on complex machinery but on balance, gravity, and trained coordination. A small group of soldiers could control the entire gateway, even in extreme situations.

While documenting this for my book, I often imagine the pressure under which these mechanisms were used, the sound of chains tightening, the bridge slowly rising, and the fort transforming into an unbreakable shield. The wear on the stones, polished smooth by centuries of use, confirms that this system was not theoretical but actively used. Writing about these details makes me feel connected to the engineers and soldiers of Hazrat Tipu Sultan’s time, and it strengthens my belief that these forts were living military systems, carefully designed for real warfare, not just symbols of power.

This is a Triangular Fortification Structure featuring a Moat for defensive purposes, typically accompanied by a drawbridge for access. Can you identify the potential drawbacks of this design, particularly in the context of 18th-century fortifications in southern India?
