Certified Shadetree

A Maintenance Technician by profession and a natural Jack-Of-All-Trades, I have been working on my own (mostly) junk vehicles for 30+ years. Sometimes out of necessity, but mostly for hobby. Thusly I have deemed myself to be a "Certified Shadetree." With that out of the way, I'll unashamedly admit I am what you would call a Connoisseur of fine GM vehicles. On my channel, I will show you helpful DIY tips and tricks from a late model Chevy/GM enthusiast's point of view, with the occasional product review thrown in for good measure. Thanks for your support! For inquiries: certifiedshadetree@gmail.com

So, I tried a tankful E85. The station said the blend was actually E60. Paid $3.599/gallon versus $5.299/gallon for 91 Octane non-oxy (E0). On my last tank of E0 my car got 21.54 MPG. On this tank of E60, it got 19.28 MPG. Filled up again today with E85, and this time the station stated the blend was E70. Price was $3.759/gallon, versus $5.459 for E0. I'm expecting the MPGs to drop a bit due to more ethanol in this tankful. The first tank of E85 cost $49 even, this one today cost $50.40.

As far as how the car ran, NGL, it seemed a bit peppier off the line (could also be psychological, knowing the E85 is rated at 105 octane.) The exhaust has a distinct smell to it, almost sweeter smelling. The ECU seemed to take a couple of days to fully adjust to the E85, as an example, when I'd restart the car when it was warm after sitting for an hour, the engine would stumble for a couple of seconds after shifting into reverse.

So far so good. I don't know that I'd run it in the winter, but then again, they blend more "pure" gas into it during the cold months, so it might not be an issue.

Assuming it's compatible, have you ever run E85 in your vehicle? If so, what kind of changes did you see? Right now, with non-oxy 91 at $5.29 a gallon, I'm thinking about giving E85 a try at $3.59 a gallon just to see how much my mileage drops, and what kind of changes in performance it makes.

Hypothetically, your brake pads are worn down to the point they're just metal-on-metal against the rotors. What do you tell people you need replaced?
