My name is Matt and I teach woodcarving, laser engraving and also make custom axes. Join me on my journey as I make tutorials and How-to videos over DIY crafts involving wood and metal.

How do you make money with your artwork? • Find a specific niche (niche: group of people wanting a specific or certain product) and solve that NEED. Example: I carve axe handles.
What does this look like for you? • Is it: Baseball bats? Birdhouses? Signs? Caricature carvings? (Doug Linker is amazing btw)
Experiment and find what speaks to you. Inspiration is everywhere. Some people I know even carve ear-rings!
Actionable step for THIS WEEK: Get a pen and paper and jot down the first things that come to mind. Remember: • No Idea is stupid. • Skills have to be developed - be easy on yourself. • Your breakthrough is on the other side of the negative thoughts of what YOU THINK you know about what you are capable of. (Read that again)
Give yourself permission to sit and jot down those ideas.
Power & Torque: Foredom delivers more consistent power and torque, ideal for heavy-duty carving, while Dremel is better for lighter tasks.
Speed Control: Foredom’s foot pedal allows for precise speed control, whereas Dremel offers variable speed settings with a dial.
Durability: Foredom’s heavy-duty construction and industrial-grade flex shaft are built to withstand rigorous, extended use, while Dremel’s lighter build is more suited for occasional or hobbyist work.
Versatility: Dremel’s wide range of attachments makes it more versatile for general use, while Foredom’s specialized tools excel in professional carving.
Price Point: Foredom is a bigger investment with long-term value, while Dremel offers a more budget-friendly option for hobbyists.

Psssttt... Your art isn’t limited to just one medium. Don’t be afraid to mix it up. Give yourself permission to do something different. If you are carving, consider adding something to that wood that will make it unique.
I’m not saying this will work on every project… but It can give you a creative spin on your art that might be the very thing you feel has been missing. I used that very idea here when I added an arrowhead, feathers and Rattlesnake skin to this tomahawk. The snakeskin was a random idea I almost dismissed… don’t be afraid to experiment! -Matt
