Mountains To Mangroves

In the past, Panbu's daily existence relied on natural springs. These springs are vanishing now.
Families are being forced to ration every drop of water due to deforestation, land degradation, and shifting climate patterns. Everyday life, farming, and health are all impacted by the unpredictability of water access, with women bearing the majority of the burden.
In order to comprehend how water scarcity is changing lives and what it means for the future, ICON Fellow Birmit Lepcha interviews Panbu locals, including those who live in Kambal Dinglali Basti.
This narrative is a component of a broader initiative to record the effects of climate change and local reactions in vulnerable environments, such as mangroves and mountains.
Watch to see how water scarcity is no longer a concern for the future.

Mountains To Mangroves

Everyday life started to fall apart when the rain didn't stop.

Farms were inundated. Roads became weaker. Houses were left vulnerable. The vulnerability of mountain communities to extended rainfall and extreme climate events was gradually revealed by what initially appeared to be typical weather.

This short film examines why preparedness, resilience, and community-led responses are becoming crucial in a changing climate while reflecting on lived experiences during persistent rainfall.

It is now essential to comprehend the true effects of extreme weather events on day-to-day living as they become more common.

See how the meaning of safety in the mountains, livelihoods, and landscapes are changing as a result of climate change.

Mountains To Mangroves

Climate change is increasing the uncertainty of farming in many mountain regions. However, farmers in Panbo, Kalimpong, report a more subdued change occurring on their property.
ICON Fellow Ananta Patir reports from Panbo, where the MTM initiative's long-term restoration and tree-planting initiatives are starting to have an impact on regular farming. A local farmer considers how mature trees are changing field conditions, impacting soil moisture, shade, and crop response to climate change.
This narrative examines the consequences of merging farming and conservation, as well as how patient ecological work can begin to reduce the strain on land and livelihoods.

Mountains To Mangroves

Climate change is subtly changing farming practices in mountain communities, including what crops thrive, how water is managed, and how families make ends meet.

Yashvi Devan reports from Panbu, Kalimpong, where farmers explain how agriculture is constantly changing due to crop diseases, shifting rainfall patterns, and decreasing soil moisture. These choices, which range from potatoes to cardamom and back again, are influenced by climate stress and uncertainty rather than personal preference.

The film also highlights how communities are responding—through climate-resilient farming practices and restoration efforts led by Action for Mountains and Peoples, ATREE, and partners working across the mountain-to-mangrove landscape to strengthen soils, retain water, and support long-term resilience.

This is a tale of perseverance, adaptation, and the close relationship between livelihoods, water, and land.
