I have had one of those irritating afternoons… I had a plan to dispatch some books, mount my latest stitching and then start work on a new piece, but as I was trying to ship the books, my printer broke… I tried to fix it but it was totally dead so I had to go off to the shops and buy a new one. I did manage to get the books dispatched and this new piece mounted but didn’t get chance to start a new stitching… so that will have to wait until tomorrow.
Having said that, I am really pleased with this new piece, it fills me with a sense of calm when I look at it, which was certainly needed this afternoon. This piece is entitled 08/01/26 (the date the artwork was completed) and is now uploaded to my archive of artworks on my website (link in bio).
I’m still loving this green but am now considering what colour to pair with it… this vintage cream has been knocking around for a while and I feel somewhat drawn to it… so maybe that is the one…
At the start of each month, I lay out my daily stitch drawings from that past month into a calendar grid format, whereby the first column represents Monday, the second Tuesday and so on. The first stitching in row one therefore represents the 1st day of the month and shows the stitching created on that day.
When I place them out into this grid, it is the first time I see them together as a group. When they are displayed like this, I stop looking at the individual stitchings and begin to look at them as a whole. They take on a different dimension, they are now a collection of abstract stitchings that are talking to each other. You don’t look at the individual stitching, you instead look at the pattern created by the blue stitched areas and the negative white unstitched fabric.
And… If you want to start your own daily practice, do take a look at my book, it is a ‘daily practice handbook’ to help you form your own daily practice – link in bio! There are only a few copies of my second edition left!!
I finished this piece a few days ago, but with taking down the Brampton exhibition, followed by a busy few days, I have only just got around to uploading this piece to my archive of artworks on my website and sharing it on here. This is the first piece of a new large scale collection artwork that I am working on – there will be 9 stitchings at this size in total. I don’t often work in just black/grey, I was initially thinking this new collection of 9 stitchings would bring some bright colour into it somewhere, but I am now wondering if just sticking with the grey/black would be more impactful… I will have a think.
This piece is entitled 21/12/25 (the date the artwork was completed) and is now uploaded to my archive of artworks on my website (link in bio).
Well, what a year it has been, a solo exhibition, lots of new artworks, lots of press and my FIRST BOOK!!
And I can’t quite believe how successful the book has been – the first edition sold out shortly after it was released in the summer and now, I only have 18 books remaining of the second edition! Thank you to everyone who has purchased a copy!!
In the new year I will be ordering the third batch (third edition) of the book, but the price will go up from £25 to £30 (+ shipping), so if you want to get your hands on one of the remaining few copies of the second edition before they are sold out and before the price rises in the new year, get your orders in now! The book is called ‘ONE A DAY, EVERY DAY’ and it is two books in one.
The book is there to help you to form your own daily practice. From one side there is an introduction to me, followed by my daily stitch drawings (one of my daily practices).
Turn the book over and it is your handbook to forming your own daily practice, whether this be drawing, writing, mindfulness or something else. There is an introduction to daily practice followed by a page a day for one year.
You can use your page a day to form your own daily practice
I am developing ideas for a new large scale collection artwork; I have drafted a design which I am really pleased with but I am now contemplating colours… well I’m contemplating grey. The piece is going to incorporate a few colours but I’m starting with black and grey. The question is what grey… I have done a few tests to try to figure it out… and I’m still not sure.
I can’t quite believe that we are nearly there already, but this time next week, the exhibition at the Brampton Museum and Art Gallery will be closing… how sad…
What it does mean is that if you haven’t yet been, or if you have been hundreds of times and fancy one more visit, you have one more week!
‘A Common Thread’ is a textile take-over at the Brampton Museum and Art Gallery in Newcastle-under-Lyme (Staffordshire, UK) and features three exhibitions, each connected by two themes…. ’Thread’ and ‘Newcastle-under-Lyme’
Fine Art – An exhibition of stitched artworks by ‘JPR Stitch’ aka Dr Jack Roberts (ME!!), which is the one you can see here in the photos.
Craft – An exhibition of textile craft-based artefacts from the Museum’s collection.
Industry and Fashion – An exhibition exploring local textile history and industry.
The exhibition is open Tuesday-Sunday, until the 21st December 2025 and is free entry.
This area of pink took a little bit of a wayward turn… it started to get very bulky and lumpy as I kept changing the shape, so I got my knife out and cut 3 big areas out, patched in some new fabric and blended it in. It never feels right cutting areas out (and sometimes it doesn’t work), but after a little perseverance with the pink, the piece has come back to me! The shape is feeling well balanced and the pink area is now void of lumps and has a lovely stitched texture running consistently over the whole area.
