The postman has delivered some rather large boxes today… the third printing of my book!!
It still feels very surreal to me when I look at the book, to think that I have actually produced a book… I can’t quite believe it. As an artist it is a huge accomplishment, but personally, being dyslexic, it feels even more of an achievement!
However, I now need you to get buying them, the first edition sold out, the second edition sold out and now we need a sold out third edition too, otherwise I have got to find somewhere to put all of these books…
Here are the details -
The book is called ‘ONE A DAY, EVERY DAY’ and it is two books in one.
The book is there to help you to form your own daily practice. From one side there is an introduction to me, followed by my daily stitch drawings (one of my daily practices).
Turn the book over and it is your handbook to forming your own daily practice, whether this be drawing, writing, mindfulness or something else. There is an introduction to daily practice followed by a page a day for one year.
You can use your page a day to form your own daily practice
At the end of last year, I planned a new collection artwork that would be created out of 9 stitchings (all this size) with a single design that runs through them all, I started creating the central piece but as I did, a new idea emerged… and this is the result of that idea… the piece is covered in cream/white stitching with black thread overlayed to create the design.
This piece is entitled 12/02/26 (the date the artwork was completed) and is now uploaded to my archive of artworks on my website (link in bio).
At the end of last year, I planned a new collection artwork that would be created out of 9 stitchings (all this size) with a single design that runs through them all, I started creating this piece but as I did, a new idea emerged… but it was too late to change this stitching so I decided to create another version, this one is now finished, but the other version still needs some work. I will finish that in the next day or so and then, when I have both to compare, I can decide what direction the new collection piece might take…
This piece is entitled 08/02/26 (the date the artwork was completed) and is now uploaded to my archive of artworks on my website (link in bio).
There is lots of work going on in the background at the moment in preparation for the next exhibition… it is all very exciting - details to follow soon
I have finished stitching the white/cream on this piece and decided to go outside into the bright winter sunshine to photograph it, which I did (see images 3 & 4). As I was doing so, I caught a glimpse of the piece with the sun shining through the stitches/fabric and loved how it looked (images 1 &2). Maybe backlighting some of my stitchings is something to look into… it’s not something I have ever done before, but I do really like the effect here!
I’m working on two pieces at the same time – each with the same design but with different colour options… one will be black and dark grey and the other off-white and black… from what I have in my mind, they will look very different when they are completed.
I am not sure which is my favourite at the moment…
Yesterday, I started a new piece, I decided to continue with a large-scale collection artwork that I planned out and started before Christmas. The final piece will consist of 9 large stitchings, 1 I have already created and this is the start of the next one.
I decided to start by stitching out all of the black lines, before I started filling in any areas just to make sure I got my lines as I wanted them. The plan was that the central area will be fully filled with black and then the areas coming in will be a dark grey. However, having stitched this, I really liked the bold graphic style, it seems to capture the free-flowing nature of my daily stitch drawings. This afternoon, I have had a go at mounting this piece as it was with the idea that this could be a ‘finished’ piece.
However, it didn’t really work, the unstitched fabric was very distorted as it always gets with a lot of heavy stitching pulling the fabric in all directions, I tried steaming it and stretching it on a board, but the last image was the best I got to…
That then leaves me with a couple of possibilities. I could continue with this stitching as planned (black and grey) or I could change colours/ideas where the piece is fully stitched in white/cream with this graphic black stitching over the top, which would look similar to this but overcome the distortion issues… or I could do both and create two ‘sister’ pieces with the same design, one black and grey and one black and white
