Bastiaan's dissertation uncovers the long, overlooked history of people who used scientific experiments to study life after death—from Mesmerism, Somnambulists, and further to Spiritualists, Spiritists, parapsychologists and near-death researchers. Instead of asking whether their claims are true, it reveals the shared methods and “experimental culture” (revised now to "scientific culture") behind two centuries of afterlife investigation, challenging the idea that science and religion occupy separate worlds.
