🎈 Abdominal Bloating in TCM
Abdominal bloating is one of the most common complaints in clinic. In TCM, it’s called Fu Zhang and refers to distension and fullness around the navel—without pain, but often uncomfortable or chronic.
🌀 Common TCM Causes:
🥢 Poor diet (cold/raw foods, overeating, irregular eating)
🧠 Emotions—especially worry and overthinking, which weaken the Spleen
🧪 Western equivalents include:
IBS, chronic gastritis, ulcers, colitis, eating disorders, PMS, gallstones, hepatitis, pancreatitis, and even anxiety/depression.
🧭 Treatment Tips:
🎯 Ear Acupuncture: ST, SP, Abdomen zones
🥗 Diet therapy plays a HUGE role—always tailor it to your patient's pattern (Cold-Damp? SP Qi Deficiency? LV Qi stagnation?)
💡 Whether it’s Spleen Qi not transforming, or Damp obstructing the MJ, identifying the root is key.

👃 The Nose in TCM: A Diagnostic Goldmine
According to 5 Element Theory, the Lung opens into the nose, making it a crucial area for evaluating respiratory and Wei Qi function.
But there’s so much more to observe!
🗺️ Facial Zones in Diagnosis:
Bridge of the nose → reflects the Liver
Tip of the nose → reflects the Spleen
🎨 Color Clues to Watch For:
🟢 Green/blue tip → Cold in the Spleen (often with abdominal pain)
💛 Yellow tip → Damp-Heat in the Spleen
⚪ Pale tip → Blood Deficiency
🔴 Red tip → Lung Heat
🟢 Greenish bridge → Liver Qi stagnation
⚫ Greyish bridge → Liver Blood stasis
🔥 Red bridge → Liver Fire
💧 Nasal Discharge Patterns:
💧 Clear & watery → Cold pattern
🟡 Thick yellow → Heat pattern
👩⚕️ These subtle facial cues are powerful tools when combined with tongue and pulse diagnosis!

🔥 Irritability in TCM
Irritability in Chinese medicine ranges from mild impatience to explosive anger or rage. It’s more than a personality trait — it reflects internal imbalance.
🌿 Common Causes (TCM Perspective):
- Alcohol consumption
- Drug use or medication side effects
- Chronic illness
-Kidney Essence deficiency (failing to anchor Yang)
- Often associated with Liver Qi stagnation or Liver Heat
- When Liver Qi becomes constrained, it transforms into Heat — leading to mood swings, frustration, and anger.
🎯 Treatment Options:
👂 Ear acupuncture points: Shen Men, HT & LV
💡 Clinical focus:
Soothe the Liver, calm the Shen, and anchor Yang — especially in patients with chronic stress or long-term depletion.

🥑 In TCM, the Gallbladder is not "just" a small sac that stores bile: it is a key organ for courage, mental clarity, and decision-making.
In Chinese Medicine, it belongs to the Wood element, paired with the Liver (as its Zang-Fu partner), and supports the smooth flow of Qi throughout the body.
It stores and excretes bile, which aids digestion, but it also influences the flexibility of the tendons, muscles, and connective tissues.
There is a common saying: "The Liver plans, the Gallbladder decides." It is closely linked to courage, judgment, and the capacity to make a "cut" or final decision.
When its energy (GB Qi) is balanced, we feel determined, bold, and capable of moving forward after a physical or emotional shock.
🧐 Signs of Imbalance:
- Emotionally: Indecision, procrastination, timidity, irritability, resentment, or explosive anger.
- Physically: A bitter taste in the mouth, lateral headaches (temporal), dizziness, digestive disturbances, and tension in the hypochondriac region (flanks) or the upper back.
⏰ The Organ Clock:
The Gallbladder is at its peak activity between 11 PM and 1 AM. This is the ideal window for the body (and Mind) to "digest" the events of the day.
Frequent waking during these hours can point toward a Wood element disharmony, especially if the person is ruminating or doubting their life choices.
👉 In my clinical practice and when teaching TCM, I love working with this Fu organ when my patients tell me: "I can't seem to make a decision" or "I feel stuck in my life."
What about you? Do you recognize yourself more in the courageous, "go-getter" side of your Gallbladder... or its indecisive side? Let me know in the comments, and save this post to revisit during your next bout of insomnia between 11 PM and 1 AM! 😉
