I frequently receive questions from my supply chain students at Sheridan College, asking, "Professor, what is the single most important skill I need to land a job as a Purchasing Analyst?"

To provide a clear answer, I conducted some research. After analyzing 60 job postings from across Canada on LinkedIn and Indeed, I identified a distinct hierarchy of skills essential for this role.

If you are preparing for a job search, here is what you need to know:

Tier 1: The Non-Negotiables
You will be evaluated based on your data management skills. More than 90% of roles require ability in Data Analysis (95%) or Advanced Excel (92%). These skills are essential for modern Supply Chain positions.

Tier 2: The Procurement Fundamentals
You must understand the landscape. Knowledge of the end-to-end Procurement Lifecycle (82%) is essential. This demonstrates your ability to step into the role and grasp the workflow from day one.

Understanding which skills to prioritize is essential, but demonstrating them in an interview is equally important. To help you confidently tackle this, check out my YouTube playlist, "How to Land a Procurement Job: A Professor's Interview Guide." It features three videos that cover 24 vital technical questions across the procurement life cycle. I want you to know that engaging with this series will prepare you to stand out in your following SCM interview.
