Did Pope Francis Deny Jesus?

Recently, the Internet seemed ablazed with Pope Francis' statement in Singapore in an inter-religious dialogue, which has left many saying that the Pope denied Jesus Christ as the WAY, because it is written in John 14:6 that "Jesus is the way, the truth and the life," and that "no one comes to the Father except through Jesus." This write-up is simply an explanation of the Pope's statement and how it aligns with Biblical truths and practices. Therefore, I invite you to patiently read to the end before commenting, and endeavour to share as well in order to edify those who have misrepresented the Holy Father.

To begin with, the media’s translation of Pope Francis’ comments suggested he said: "All religions are a way to arrive at God." However, the official Vatican transcript reveals a nuanced clarification: "Religions are seen as paths trying to reach God." Whether we go by the report of the secular media or by the official website of the Vatican, the statement of the Pope depicts that people in various religious traditions are sincerely seeking God, but this does not equate all religions as possessing the fullness of truth, which the Church teaches is found in Christ. How can we understand this?

That this statement was made in the context of an interreligious dialogue shows how important we must understand both the nature of inter-religious dialogue and the accurate context of his remarks. Inter-religious dialogue refers to the constructive and respectful conversations between people of different religious traditions, aimed at fostering mutual understanding and cooperation, while maintaining fidelity to one’s own beliefs.

Now, returning to the Vatican transcript, it adds, "There is only one God, and religions are like languages that try to express ways to approach God." We can relate this to St. Paul’s interaction with the Athenians in Acts 17:22-23. Paul, who's known as the first Christian to engage in an interreligious dialogue in the New Testament, acknowledged that the Athenians, in their religious practices, were striving to know God. When Paul visited Athens, he pointed to the altar they had dedicated "to an unknown god" and revealed to them that this "unknown god" was the one true God they were seeking, though they did not yet know Him (Acts 17:22-23). Needless to say, Paul recognized that their natural religious instincts were a step toward the truth, which would ultimately be fulfilled in Christ. Rather than dismissing their sincere search for God, Paul pointed out that the "unknown god" they were seeking was, in fact, the one true God revealed fully in Jesus Christ. This indicates that their religion was like a path or a way in getting to know God. In a similar way, Pope Francis’ remarks reflect the Church’s recognition that people of various religions are genuinely searching for God, even if they do not yet fully understand Him.

And as a matter of fact, Pope Francis has repeatedly affirmed Jesus Christ as the way to salvation in his homilies, reflections, and official writings several times. I'll mention just two:

1. Homily on October 16, 2013:
During a daily homily at Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis explicitly spoke about Jesus as the only door to salvation: “Jesus is the gate. All those who came and said what to do without this gate were thieves and robbers. The only gate is Jesus. We can’t enter eternal life by any other gate." In this homily, Pope Francis affirmed that Jesus is the one way to the Father, and only through Him can we attain salvation.

2. Angelus Reflection on August 25, 2019:
In his reflection on Luke 13:22-30, where Jesus speaks about entering through the narrow door, Pope Francis stressed the need faithfulness in following Christ, as the only door through which we can attain salvation.

This two statements above of Pope Francis remain the cornerstone of Catholic teaching and our mission to evangelize.

In the light of the foregoing, we must also remember that God’s salvific plan encompasses all humanity, even those who may not yet explicitly know or follow Christ. This explains why before the coming of Christ, people had access to God through the light of natural law and their desire to seek God because in Genesis 3:15, the prophecy of the coming Redeemer is proclaimed, indicating that from the very beginning, God had a plan to save humanity through Christ. This means that even before Christ walked the earth, people could be drawn to God in anticipation of the salvation He would bring. Thus, it is possible for people to reach God either directly through Christ - as those who explicitly follow Him - or indirectly through their sincere search for truth and the working of God's grace in their lives. The death of Christ on the cross was for the entire world (1 John 2:2), including those who do not yet know Him. In this sense, Christ is the central figure of salvation, and His redemptive work reaches everyone, even those outside the explicit knowledge of Christianity.

For instance, in Genesis 14:18-20 - where Melchizedek, a priest-king who was not part of the covenant people, offered bread and wine and was recognized as a priest of the Most High God. Also, the Noahic covenant (Genesis 9:9-17) represents God’s commitment to all of humanity before the coming of Christ in the flesh. Likewise, Abraham’s covenant (Genesis 12:1-3) established a special relationship between God and Abraham’s descendants, yet this blessing was to extend to "all the families of the earth." Judaism, through its covenant with God and the Law of Moses, prefigured the coming of Christ, who would fulfill the Law and open the way for salvation to all nations.

Speaking of even pagans, we have seen that God worked through figures in history, to carry out His divine will. For example, Cyrus, the Persian king, was described as God's "anointed" (Isaiah 45:1), even though he did not know God in the same way as the Israelites did. Yet, God used Cyrus to allow the Israelites to return to their homeland and rebuild the Temple, showing that God’s grace can operate through unexpected individuals.

All these were before the advent of Christ in the flesh, yet people had access to the Father; and even after the coming of Christ, St. Paul made use of an aspect of the Athenians religion - the altar dedicated to the unknown God as a means of reaching the true God.

The teaching of the Church, therefore, is that Christ is the definitive revelation of God, but God’s grace is not limited by human understanding or knowledge. The Second Vatican Council, in Lumen Gentium 16, affirms that those who seek God sincerely, even if they do not know Christ explicitly, can still be saved by God's grace because Christ’s redemptive act on the cross is for all humanity, past, present, and future. As the Council states, "Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or His Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do His will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience — those too may achieve eternal salvation." This is not to say that all religions are equal or that they provide the fullness of truth as revealed in Christ. Rather, it means that God’s grace can operate in ways beyond our full comprehension. While Christ is the only way to salvation, His saving work is universal, including those who, by no fault of their own, do not know Him explicitly but live according to the light they have received.

Therefore, Pope Francis' statement, when properly understood, illustrates this understanding in a broader sense of how God's grace can work in the world. While the Church's mission remains to proclaim Christ as the only Saviour, we must also recognize that God is at work in ways that sometimes surpass our understanding, drawing people to Himself in various ways, whether directly through Christ or indirectly through their sincere search for God. Christ is still the mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5), even for those who do not yet fully recognize Him. God’s mercy and grace are not confined to the visible boundaries of the Church, and He can guide people toward Himself in ways that ultimately find their fulfillment in Christ, whether they know Him explicitly or not.
